Potentially stupid question, but did Francis have Japanese citizenship? It seems strange that they would withdraw due to "lack of preparation" if they were eligible for the Olympics, as they seemed like the obvious winners even if they were slightly underprepared (especially since nationals is a requirement for making the Olympic team, except for World medalists, which they are obviously not).

Francis is Canadian, so they are not eligible for Olympics.

which made me wonder if they simply opt for voiding the Olympic team selection process...so in the end the team representing Japan will be the team winning Japan Nationals, not team no. 2. I already felt for them when they had to participate in Nebelhorn to earn that spot for Japan.

Yes.
It is next to impossible for a non Japanese person to receive Japanese citizenship.

Being an overseas skater, skating for Japan is both a blessing and a curse.

I was there, attending Pairs SP competition. :)

Skating-wise I preferred Narumi/Ryo much more than Miu/Ryu, but I agreed with judges, the latter just had better pair-elements, including sbs 3Lz.

C'mon guys, "It ain't over till it's over!" :clapper::clapper:
