China has probably no competitive girls. But it is good for the USFSA and their second girl.

Absolutley can't wait to see a program featuring Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Two of my favorite musicians and a very interesting musical selection. :hap93:

Super excited to see Gubanova, Eunsoo and Starr. I'd love it if all three were to end up on the podium :)

Yes, 50 million youtube views is impressive but I cannot see her taking over Nastya Tarakanova who with 196 won senior age juvenile Russian Nationals ahead of Trusova, Nugumanova, Panenkova, Gulyakova, and Samodurova.

Starr won't be on the podium unless it's over Eunsoo, and she'd need to fall like 4 jumps.

Gubanova and Tarakanova are almost guaranteed to be top 2 by a massive margin.

Starr is a young athlete that forged her way up the U.S. junior rankings last season from not even being listed in the JGP international selection pool to making the Junior World team (which is very tough for a junior nationals competitor because those ladies spots usually go to U.S. junior ladies who compete in the senior event). She finished second at Junior Nationals, won the replacement spot on the junior world team over Tessa Hong, Paige Rydberg, etc. And did a nice job with her short program. Her free was ???, but I guess we can understand that for her first ISU event. No, she isn't a favorite to medal. (I'm rooting for Gubanova & Eunsoo, and I know there are some top athletes here that I've never seen).

But I like Starr. I like that she's had the guts to try the triple axel this summer. I like that she's been out there competing against higher caliber athletes. I like that her short program and her free skate were completely different styles last season. I don't care at all about some old youtube video, but I like that she's striving to be stronger. It's obvious that the depth of the junior Russian & Japanese programs are very strong right now and that the athletes coming out of those programs have already fended off a much deeper level of competition than the U.S. girls. And I'm very impressed by the young Korean ladies/coaches/federation building their own program with this generation. But the American girls have to start somewhere. They have to get out into international competition like Starr did last season and see how far they have to climb. And the novices coming up seem a step stronger. (Angelina Huang, who is here, won novice Nationals last season. I saw the novices live last year, and she has nice spring in her jumps).

So I am looking forward to seeing both U.S. ladies here and if they can take that next step.

Of all the young Russian ladies, Gubanova is the one I feel has exquisite artistry. I would like to see that rewarded over the athletes who are reaping high PCS scores based on technical prowess. And Eunsoo is an emotive performer helping to build a new skating power. Exciting.

No critique of Ms. Anders from me - just some curiousity after the famous video. But yes, her getting a medal here does not look realistic because the competition is quite strong.

Gubanchik vs Eunsoo.
My life is complete. :yahoo:

I would love it if the face off happened in the JGPF.:hopelessness: Hoping for a silver for Eunsoo, but more wishing she has a wonderfully skated 2 programs because I ADORE both her SP and FS this year unlike last year's FS.:yahoo: Needless to say, the people of Austria are in for a treat with all these fantastic skaters for 1 event.:)

I do not expect Starr to medal- I just got a kick out of her performance when she was 9, and am interested to see how she is doing this year. I would be happy to see her make top 6.

if clean then Eunsoo and Gubanova will medal, but Nastya have problem with her Lutz and Eunsoo isnt always clean. im not familiar with any of the Japanese girls but they can be on top 5 definitely? it's hard to predict with Starr, her score isnt bad based on JWC 2017, if she can topped that i can see her getting podium, maybe 3rd place?

if tarakanova will skate clean she seems like a favorite to me. but she's not the most consistent skater unfortunately, and she does not had enough time with eteri to change that. people say that she skated bad at test skates.
i want to see loena hendrickx on the podium, along with 2 anastasias. but with eunsoo and yamashita that's hardly a possibility

Tarakanova has been up and down through last 3 years:
- dominated novice level in 2014/15 (nat. champion),
- took total slump and didn't even advance to novice nats in 2015/16,
- has had very good novice season 2016/17 (nat. champion).
I'm interested myself, what she brings to the table this season (she said she didn't practice quads though).

I'd say any Russian ladies who has a spot at an JGP event is a force. I am not familiar with Tarakanova but she probably will be among the top 3.

Just realized Starr Andrews is already 16. She should be given the spot based on her junior national placement, and her age. It is already a little late to get the first international experience.
