I honestly don't think it is a step backward. Spiderman was entertaining but quite overrated IMO. It had all these gimmicks and hops (to gain speed) that hid weaknesses in his basic presentation and skating skills, but he can't skate to that sort of programs all the time. This program kind of just presents his skating the way it is.

I think it would've been clever to use a program that 'hid his weaknesses' in the Olympic Season. Not necessarily Spiderman, but something similar. Like Javier Fernandez who often skates similar themed programs. I thought that worked great for Boyang. It's just my own personal feeling that this program lacks character from Boyang. Like I said, I know that movie and soundtrack inside out and I expected more from him, choreography and interpretation wise. I think it can still grow over the season, but the music makes that almost impossible. I would've wished for another cut, perhaps only with only A Love before Time and without the drums. And that costume doesn't exactly scream Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon either.

Honestly, the varied reactions to Boyang's programs are interesting. I actually loved it from the start. With the excessive repeats and warhorses, Boyang's program is refreshing to me. I get that cutie, outgoing Boyang is fun to watch, but good for him for branching out.

I think this program with some more seasoning will be wonderful by the Olympics.

I do like Jin's SP, but I think it needs some work. The music cuts don't seem to build organically. The beginning starts out romantically and warm and inviting and then it seems the fast percussion of the last piece is only there for the footwork sequence. I'm not sure what he can do about that though. Maybe I'm used to hearing the music starting out fast and then building to the romantic part which is how it's usually performed in concert, etc. I also think he should change his costume. It does nothing for him. I think it should be an actual color and be warm and inviting, especially if he's going to use the romantic piece. I would like to see a bit more of the "Dark Cloud" character reflected.

Love Rippon & Kolyada's SP :2thumbs:

Always love to have some pop music and Rippon have a good cut of it, movements right on the music.
Kolyada's is showing awesome skating skills, he did some jumps with minimal preparation, which is impressive.

A bit not sure about Jin's music... the 3 parts sounds a bit detached to me. I watched Hidden Tiger, Crouching Drago, so I know the music, not sure how the audiences and the judges will react to the program if they don't have the background.

I think with Spiderman Boyang sold the heck out of it, had a blast performing it and was very expressive. With this new SP, he's not having a blast performing it (yet), so I don't love it as much as Spiderman (yet) ...

Thanks for posting the videos. First time seeing Adam's and Boyang's programs and WOW.

Adam's interpretation of the music is spot on, great spins, ice coverage and that footwork section
I hope it was a level four because it was gorgeous.

What a surprise from Boyang a/k/a Spiderman. With this program I see a maturity to his skating, a softness to his movements,
and I thought he had a very good connection to the music, loved it! I hope to see an increase in his PC's with a program like
this. I am not worried about his tech score because that is excellent. IMO this SP is a great choice for the Olympic season.

Spiderman isn't overrated, its UNDERrated! I think every skater wants their programs to hide their weaknesses and show their strength. Its quite logical. Aside from that, I'm glad Boyang is going into a more serious genre of music. And beside its not like Boyang is abandoning his personality completely cause his new FS is more his character.

Cute will only take you so far. This is a much more interesting program in the long run. He's finally learning that you don't have to rush through attacking attacking attacking everything in sight--programs can be so much more interesting when they have levels, peaks and valleys.

It's the Chinese way--learn the tech first. Then you learn artistry. I agree with Mrs P--it's not only a smart move to branch out, it is quite a potentially good Olympic SP. Good for him.

With Adam, I think the program will be far more fun later in the year when he is more familiar with it and can really really bring out his inner beeyutch diva. There are flashes of it, but a full on blast of it will be divatastic!

And it's a good program to pair with the birds program. Adam's got range.

Jin and Kolyada are probably my favorite male skaters right now. Jin's program to me is excellent and seems a natural progression to me. Kolyada's program seems something of a step backwards. He is such a strange and enigmatic presence on the ice. It's like this new program is designed to help him blend in instead of accentuating how special he is. I don't really like that about it.

Changing to a more vibrant costume would make a huge difference to Boyang's program. I love the drums, but I did feel like the program ended abruptly. Going clean will increase the impact. If he could, backloading more would too.

Well, he can't keep playing a puppet or a cartoon character forever. I like the SP because it's the first program he's had that looks mature and makes me think maybe his range is not quite so limited (although I don't understand why those music cuts were chosen to go together). The LP is another story...

What a lovely skate by Kolyada! Not what I was expecting. I mean, I enjoyed his wacky stuff, but this is was so classy and elegant. Very smooth.

Aren't they the same music cuts that Liza had in her SP last year? At any rate, it sounds awfully familiar...

But this is his SP from last year and was paired with the Birds LP then lol, he's fairly familiar with it already, just coming back into his own after injury. ;)

Yes, I thought the same thing. I love Boyang's program... the music and the softness in his skating. Kolyada's, on the other hand, does nothing for me. In fact I found it hard to stay focused through the whole thing. He's a very talented skater, but the program...:slink:

Absolutely love BoYang's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon program, and the direction he is developing and moved forward. It showcases a more pensive, melodic, lyrical, maturing aspect to his skating than ever before. Last year he won the crowd's heart, this year is about winning their minds. The most thing is it felt as he is owning the program, instead of let it own him, or compromising his natural instinct for crowd pleasing/ judges marks.

Goodness me. His carriage and lines are such improvements from 2 years ago, probably the most improved skater in men I can think of, which is what we want to see in justifying increasing PCS.

I love the music edit, the only thing is I am not sure is if I'd have put the spins sequence in the middle when the change in beat first started (or I will put in a different beat, that can build up that beat) unless he can some how make the spins change position reacting to the beat better to build to a climax, otherwise it is a bit anticlimactic when it screams there should be movements, he is in a stationary position. That beat is screaming for a wow step sequence like Seimei did for Hanyu towards the end, which I am glad this was indeed finally realised towards the end.

This could be my fav Chinese men's program by season end. It is important to hit the rhythm for the latter half for fuller effect. Martial arts is all about rhythm, the contrast of Yin and Yan, silk and steel, air and earth, complementary, contrasting, balance, symbiosis, the philosophy of Taichi. This is a great program that can elevate Wushu danceorgraphy to new heights into the 21st century. The contrasting of melodic lyricism and rhapsodic energized 2nd half is a nice nod to his heritage (like Malagueña was to Javier) and will helps him distinct himselves from all the warhorses this year. Very excited to see how this progresses.

I had wanted Karen Chen to skate to this. Good Boyang did a great job here.

The GOE for BYJ's 4lz3t is all kind of funny, from -1 to 2.
I think Adam should come to Heaven, London to do his program! King of the night!

Me too. I think he should put his final spin at the end because the ending feels a bit abrupt. Also the music cut leading up to the quad toe is so uncomfortable.
