So I was reading this interview with Majorov and he says the Swedish Olympic Committee will only send him if he qualifies and earns 260 points this season. I have to say that I don't find that a very realistic possibility for him (and rather unfair of the SOC to expect such numbers from one of their skaters). So what happens if he qualifies at Nebelhorn and has to give up his Oly spot? Is it just wasted?

Qualification places earned and not used for the individual events (not the Team event) by the NOCs, will be filled by stand-by NOCs based on the final result of the designated ISU Senior International Qualification Competition for those NOCs not qualified and not yet represented.

They're basically saying he has to break into the top twenty all-time high scorers
(because less than 20 skaters in the world have ever scored 260 or more)

Wow. How mean is that?

JULIAN Yee is facing one of the biggest weeks of his career, as the 20-year-old bids to become Malaysia’s first Winter Olympian.

The first Malaysian to participate at the World Figure Skating Championships, and the first man to win SEA Games figure skating gold, Yee could this week seal what would arguably be his most prestigious first: Olympic qualification.

"Knowing that Malaysia is a tropical country, and that we are able to excel in winter sports, really shows that anything is possible and that Malaysia is on the right path to a bright future in this forte. I also want to put my nation, even more so, the Southeast Asian region on the figure skating map and show the world that we have potential in our region."

"I think that preparations towards the Nebelhorn Trophy are going as planned,” he said.

"So far I've been able to tweak my programs and learn from mistakes to ready myself for this competition. Overall, I’m doing my best to get ready for this competition. My ultimate goal would be to qualify for the Winter Olympics – and I hope to do so by putting on a good showing at the Nebelhorn Trophy. I would also love to be able to contribute and help develop figure skating in the Southeast Asian region."

Good luck Julian! :hap10:

Oh man, I must be even more tired than I thought. Just got home from really exhausting work day, came here to check when the men's SP is starting. Looked at the time... and then hit the link to the time conversion website to see what 17:30 UTC + 2 could possibly be in my timezone.

I really do know Germany is the same timezone as the Netherlands, honestly (never mind I only live about ten minutes from Germany by car). I just... :palmf: :palmf:

Seems like the Swedish Olympic Committee watched last world's results where 260 had put him in 8th place. Between Kolyada 257.47 and Brown 269.57.

I understand that SOC has to be strict. Sweden will be sending a large group to Pyeongchang for a country of 10 million people: two hockey teams, curlers, skiiers etc. Each athlete of course is costly(I wonder how much) But this requiered score is way to high(though I'm glad Alexander has a plan ). Also I don’t think SOC realizes how tough it is for a skater from a small nation to get high points even when they perform well.

Oddly enough the skating federation's information about an olympic spot is contradicting:

to perform good enough to place in a top-eight-level position in selected competitions such as Grand Prix and Challenger competitions during the autumn.

So let's hope SOC changed their minds since the interview.

What’s the deal for the Norwegian and Finnish skaters if their countries qualify?

Well, let’s see what happens here :) and GO Nordic boys… Sondre, Alexander and Valtter :dance3:

Basically the NOC (Norwegian Olympic comitee) wants athlets to have atleast a top 8 placment at europeans or a top 12 placement at worlds. This is pretty much out of the question for Anne-Line and Sondre.
But, there is a possibility for them to make a deal to be top 12 at two competions, and they can make an agreement with the NOC about which competions that could be.
If they are not able to do that it can be made an exeption if their results are consider top international quality. Whatever that means.

This was also a problem when Anne-Line qualifed for the 2014 Olympics, were they didn`t want to send her because she did not place within the top 8 at europeans. Luckily they did see the value of sending her. In Norway being able to send a figure skater to the olympics really helped the sport, and people actually discovered that it`s possible to do something else than ski for a winter sport.
Crossing my fingers for Sondre tonight and Anne-Line tomorrow. And hoping the NOC will have the grace to send them if they qualify.

It's hard to imagine any growth in the sport when TPTB make it basically impossible for you to go to the Olys even if you manage to qualify. The odds are really stacked against you if you come from a small fed (although some are obviously more supportive than others).

Yes!
Also, are there archived streams of the ice dance and pairs from earlier today? I'm not familiar with dailymotion and hope I'm just overlooking the obvious in-your-face livestream link...

Oh, not again. :disapp: I remember the drama over whether Anne-Line was going to be allowed to go to Sochi. :drama:

If they qualify, let them go. Simple as that. The local Fed shouldn't be putting in extra requirements on top of what the governing body expects of the skaters.
