Ashley was able to, to a certain extent, and Karen really has better raw material to work with in terms of height/power/speed/edge quality than Ashley did.

It's now or never for Karen. I think if she doesn't change coaches now, her jumps will never improve.

I agree about the coaching change...who would you like her to work with? Is Rafael a chance if Ashley retires?

I honestly don’t have an idea of who Karen should work with, I don’t know the names of all the top specialists. But she needs to try something new. Karen has been working with Tammy for years now, and we still see the same issues.☹️

No offence to Gabby Daleman, but did you see her at the Olympics? And her highest gp score (196 at cup of china) was lower then Bradie(204 at skate america) and only two points higher then Miria's best(194 at nhk). She really isn't at some huge higher level then US ladies. I (mostly)don't think talent is the issue but rather drive and ambition. Katelyn is amazing but beatable. And she also had share of mistakes this season. tbh, pretty much every woman from all the countries have had bad performances this season. I'm not ready to write the US ladies off just yet-but they need to work for it.

I have always viewed Daleman as beatable by the US ladies. I do think she has an undeserved PCS advantage. The fact that she scored higher at Worlds than Mirai in the long program shows everything that is wrong with the IJS.

I think Raf would be good for Karen, especially since he's also taken on Marin Honda. Both girls are relatively close in age and really need an overhaul to get their jumps in order and make them competitive, and I think they would push each other. (Karen really has no one at Tammy's rink who is a direct competitor, aside from Hannah Miller, but Karen pretty much surpassed her years ago.) But Raf isn't the coach for everyone, and Karen would probably have to fight for his attention (which could be good or bad for her).

Orser would be a cool choice.

But really, at this point, anyone but Tammy. She just needs a change and I don't even care to whom.

I wonder what the results would be if she would just change up her jump layout . Put the Lutz as a solo jump and do the 3t-3t in the SP and 3f-3t in the FS.

She is Bradie coach, isn't she? In that case, I don't know if she would take a direct competitor. Same with Raf working with Ashley and Mariah... I agree that she needs someone who tells her the jumps and how to stick to a plan (the choreo waltz this year was concerning, I thought that at some point her coach would step in and tell her to choose one and work on it but...). She has much raw talent and it would be nice to see her as a top contender in the next years, I like her very much.

Yes, she's Bradie's coach
I don't think it's "I don't want to take a competitor" but perhaps it is, I was thinking more of "a new skater I can coach and now have two successful students" a la Eteri :)

Laura is Alysa Liu's coach so if that is the case, that wouldn't be a problem there

I don't think this system would work in the US as easily, since skaters have to pay most of their coaching expenses on their own and probably wouldn't be excited to have a possible rival under the same roof...even BOrser asked Javier if he could take Yuzuru in but I doubt that Eteri would do the same with her skaters. Different examples of coaching and different sources of income (I read that Eteri and her team have right to a share of their pupils prizes, which is a good reason to take as many good competitors as they can under their roof...as far as I know coaches in NA are paid by hour and that's it, Carroll being the only known exceptions). I do agree however that having competition under the same roof can lead to better results, I tested this myself.

I am wondering what the definition of "no nonsense" is?
Certainly the mere fact that a lady (or a man) can land jumps does not mean the coach is "no nonsense":scratch2:

Denise Myers has been coaching Bradie since she was a child, and Bradie looks to Denise for the emotional support that every good coach gives his or her skaters.

http://www.goldathletemag.com/home/2017/11/21/athlete-profile-bradie-tennell-figure-skater

"When you stick with one person they get to know you and know what works for you. I feel like that’s important in a competitive setting because everybody has his or her own way of prepping for a competition. You’re in this big and highly competitive setting and you’re obviously going to be nervous, but you don’t have to worry about what your coach is thinking of you. Your coach is used to how you prepare because you’ve been with them for so long. The comfort level is there."

So if no-nonsense means knowing your athlete, adjusting your coaching skills to your athlete, and bringing the best out of your athlete, Denise is clearly doing that with Bradie and I applaud her.

I may be remembering wrong, but doesn't she have an issue with the flip edge sometimes?

She used to do 3lo-3t on the JGP so maybe she could add one of those in the FS but the point I was trying to make is that her 3z seems too big to put into combination consistently. No need to tame that thing though. Sell it as it is for high GOE or shoot for a 4z to better utilize that hang time

Despite Karen's hang time her main issue is that she rotates way too slowly. She can barely get the 3Lz around consistently so I don't think a quad is anywhere in her future unless she can greatly increase her rate of rotation. That's really where she needs the most help.
