Elli Kopmar & Jonah Barrett, the 2017 US junior silver medallists, did not compete at Sectionals. They did compete at ISU JGP Minsk Arena Cup 2017. Their scores, which are their ISU season's best:

Am I confused? I thought Kopmar/Barrett were no longer a team.

If I remember correctly, they did not skate at Easterns. I guess they got a bye since the finished 2nd last year as juniors.

Under what rule did Kopmar & Barrett get a bye to Nationals?

Just noticed that I was not the only one with this question.

I checked the Rulebook and cannot figure it out. The one I thought would apply cannot be met since one of the criteria is an international event conflicting with sectionals. We know that will not work since Ellie was completing as a single skater at Easterns.

If there are very few teams competing (less than 4), is it necessary to skate at Sectionals? Only 2 junior pairs competed at Eastern Sectionals.

There is a 4/12 rules but this only appears to apply to singles. Under that rule, if an event has 4 or less skaters (or the entire Region has 12 or less skaters), a skater skips Regionals and goes directly to Sectionals. This year, this rule kicked in for Senior men from South Atlantics.

This rule does not appear to apply to pairs and/or Nationals.

As far back as I can remember it has applied to pairs. If you go back many times pairs have bye'd through to Nationals not having to skate at Sectionals if they do not chose to if there are less than four teams for that section. That's what I thought anyway.

Is there some kind of rule limiting what can be done in the junior pairs for SBS jumps? I'm stunned that none of these teams have at least a double axel.

There are required elements. This year it is lutz. That said when did triple twist become legal in short for Juniors? It's a good change though.

I went looking for that in the rulebook and cannot find it.

For adults (applies to Regionals, Sectionals, and Nationals), the rule is under 4, you do not have to compete unless at least 2 want to compete. Then I read it as all entries would have to compete.

It is as stated above. That said not all the rules make it into the rule book. Every year the council decides new rules and that is it. Eventually it makes it in. Such s Jr. pairs being able to do triple twist in short now. I am not sure why this is an issue though. It is the rules and where the council decisions that come out are noted ? Maybe USFS website? Still not sure again why this is an issue. Since 2005 it has been this way and maybe longer back? Enjoy Nationals!

Earlier in the thread, someone asked how they got there and by what rule since they did not skate at Sectionals. So at this point, it is more curiosity on my part than anything else.
