The 2023 Santa Claus Cup will take place Nov 29 - Dec 4, 2023, in Budapest, Hungary. The event will feature the Singles (Women and Men) in the Novice and Junior categories and will be conducted in accordance with the 2022 ISU Constitution and General Regulations, the ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules for Single & Pair Skating, the Technical Rules for Ice Dance 2023/24 (ISU Communication 2560), and relevant ISU Communications.

Ooooh. I've got a few kids here. Vayana HRISTOVA (BUL) and Varvara ABRAMKINA (CYP) in Advanced Novice Ladies; and Oliviia BAZLOVA (CYP) in Basic Novice Ladies.

And there is a little Cypriot girl that I haven't come across before in the younger Mini Cubs Ladies competition.

Other names that jumped out at me are Alica LENGYELOVÁ (SVK) in Advanced Novice Ladies, and sister Olivia LENGYELOVÁ (SVK) in Junior Ladies. Flora Marie SCHALLER (AUT) in Junior Ladies; Daniel RUIS (AUT) in Junior Men; the SALENBAUCH siblings (DEU) in Intermediate Novice Ice Dance.

This is always such a well run event. And I still wish the Santa Claus Cup was the finale of the Challenger Series rather than the Golden Spin. But, the Budapest Trophy is already a Challenger event, so they won't have two rounds in the same country, never mind the same city.

I don't know, but I have found old profiles for all three of them on the Nymburk club's website:

In the photos on those profiles, Vlasimil and Daniel definitely do look like each other.

As you can see, they all have the same coach: Alena Mrázková.

I just read a translation of the page about the history of the club (which is very intersting!), and her maiden name was Alena Jeníková. She was a successful skater at the club, and first started coaching in the late 80's, when "she was not even eighteen at the time".

Whatever the relationship between the four of them, it does seem to be some sort of a family affair.

Yes, he is their younger brother. I found this old reporting from 2018, where it's mentioned that the Mrazek siblings achieved golden hattrick.

The Santa Claus Cup begins with a monster length competition for the Basic Novice girls. 43 of them arranged into three groups of 7 girls; followed by a resurfacing; followed by two groups of 7 girls; followed by a group of 8 girls.

Oliviia goes into a 7.09 point lead!!!

And the score is only about 1.5 lower than her highest Basic Novice score, achieved at the Volvo Open Cup at the start of the month. (Funnily enough, her Basic Novice score today is the exact same as her Cubs score in Tallinn on Saturday, albeit for a different programme).

Clearly she isn't suffering from fatigue after doing two programmes in Tallinn on Saturday.

After the disappointment of finding out that Stefania has withdrawn from the Bosphorus Cup, I come over here and see that Oliviia has won!!!



So, that is three Gold Medals she has won in the space of 5 days. Cubs and Basic Novice in Tallinn on Saturday, and Basic Novice in Budapest today.

EDIT: The Advanced Novice boys have now been split into two competitions. Skater #4 Maksym SHEVCHYK (LTU) is now in a competition of his own, before the other seven boys. The rest of this post has been edited to reflect that.​

I know we always expect there to be drama with the Men's skaters, but there was some unexpected drama in the Advanced Novice Men.

Skater #4 Maksym SHEVCHYK (LTU) was moved out of the main competition and into an "Out Of Competition" competition on his own.

Presumably he hasn't finished jumping through all the hoops he has to after switching from the Ukraine to Lithuania, and the organisers didn't find out until late in proceedings.

I'll edit my reminder post to reflect this in a moment.
