Friendship always depends on personal chemistries and so I also believe it is possible for major rivals to be true friends. My professional field is small and so just about everyone knows each other and everyone competes (more or less) for the same few jobs. Some people you get good friends with, some you end up even disliking, and usually not bcs you are competing with them, but because you just don't like them as persons.
