This to me is the number one question regarding this whole farce. I mean WHAT. THE. HELL.
Forget LGBT rights, people being forcibly evicted from their homes and stray dogs being murdered because this issue isn't managed properly on a daily basis. This is what makes me roll my eyes so hard, I am giving myself a brain aneurysm.
The average daily temperature in Sochi in February is 6 C/42.8 F. As everybody who has completed primary school knows, water freezes below 0 C (although yeah, snow can survive in above 0 temperatures, obviously).
I am sure that it's lovely to be in a place which is warm and sunny and has palms on the sea front but winter sports require snow, from what I've heard.
I know Putin loves Sochi and it's his favourite Summer resort and it's the Russian St. Tropez and all that but is that really a good reason for holding Winter Olympics there? (No.)
So what has been happening for a while now is lots and lots of snow had to be artificially created and/or shipped to Sochi from elsewhere.
Norwegian technicians (supposedly the best in the business) have been hired to try to stay on top of this and according to them, the quality of snow is terrible. In the break between the Men and Pairs Team SPs, TVP showed an interview with them and with some skiers and biathletes and one of the snow technicians, made a snowball to demonstrate how bad the snow is (it looks like he really wants to lose his job ). The skiers and the biathletes are starting to freak out because the weather is very unstable and there's a possibility of rain for the cross-country event, which would make the snow situation even worse.
So yeah, no more Olympics in the (sub)tropics, pretty please.
