Odd choice of music aside, I'm really digging Kim NaHyun's SP. Her 3L-3L at the beginning was perfectly timed to the brief silence of music - although she does have to perform that jump to conviction otherwise the effect was lost. The spread eagle into 2A was very nice as well, and reminded me of Yuna's 2A.

Also love that black halter dress.

Kaetlyn's video on a Russian youtube channel has 22 likes and 26 dislikes. lol. Many commenters raging about "unbelievable inflation". Oh, to be one of those pathetic butthurt haters. Need I remind them about a certain competition in Sochi? :coffee:

It happens all the time. Some fans, who cheer only for their country, are going extremes. (here we see dislikes and comments, but sometimes it goes further, unfortunatelly...)
We should get used to it.

Where is a Kaetlyn video that I can watch?

It's a great atmosphere. Much different than on tv. Great to clap and giving standing I with fellow fans.

Oh let us commiserate together. I'm a superstitious person, so I blame the fact that I couldn't watch her in live for her bad performance. I now will speak into existence that Mirai will break her old free program score tomorrow and rise greatly in her placement.
Lol, maybe we were both to blame because I normally don't watch live and today I did! I'd like nothing more than for her to just shake it off and make your prediction come true tomorrow!;)

I do have to laugh when I hear "out of nowhere". Kaetlyn has finished in the Top 10 at Worlds, has an Olympic Silver Medal (team), has won Nebelhorn twice, a Grand Prix (Skate Canada) previously, and last month won gold defeated 2 former World Champions and the current world bonze medalist, at Finlandia.

Yup,...out of nowhere. Follow skating much? :rolleye:

To be honest that's not enough to justify that score.

This is 10 points above her PB and she got that at Finlandia Trophy two weeks ago, not ages ago. I'm sayin this as a fan of Kaetlyn: i love her packaging this season (best short program dress so far), she has everything but i would like to see some consistency to get at that level, this is almost disrespectful for the other skaters who are working so hard just for that extra 2 points for the PB, while Kaetlyn is getting everything just for one great night at Skate Canada (not even worlds or GPF)

Sorry but I'm curious: Is it the scores you don't agree with or the placement? It seems quite clear to me that Evgenia and Kaetlyn should be 1st and 2nd but maybe you see it differently? I think Satoko would be second if she hadn't had the UR and the edge call.

From what i've seen, i'm fine with the placement. I thought Kaetlyn was great and she deserves the second place, but i don't agree with the scores: 69, 70 or 71 would have been a little more appropriate considering we haven't seen a good skate from her for a very long time.

While Satoko maybe deserved at least the third place, even though i don't like her jumps at all (when she lands them, her GOEs should be around zero) and to me it's okay to see Liza ahead just because of the jumps.

I guess I don't understand why some Russians hate Kaetlyn so much. That was a good performance for her. The last Olympic champion and the last 2 world champions and 4 out of last 6 ladies worlds medalists have been Russians. When a Russian lady (or pair or man or ice dance team) skates well I think "good for them". Kaetlyn is unlikely to be a world champion so people need to untangle their knickers and just try and enjoy her skating or go get a snack or drink copiously when she's on. I just can't see how the venom that some people spew is good them.

I'm always interested in legitimate critique and justified complains and even "I just don't like this skater" but when it turns into hatred and meanness you have to think that says more about the one making the comment than the one commented on.

I wanted to edit this because I don't think it's just Russians that don't like Kaetlyn. That seems unfair of me to say. My point was I don't get why anyone hates any skater especially when their ladies have the talent to be at the top.

Consistency? That is the exact opposite of how a sport is supposed to be judged. The ladies should ALWAYS be judged by what they do on the ice on the day. That is not always the case, but frankly it's sad that it's not. We should CELEBRATE the fact that a great performance was properly rewarded without a skater having to wait their turn or put in a year of clean skates first. Judging by past results is exactly how the system SHOULD NOT work.

I would agree with you that I thought Osmond's score was high. Too high? I don't know but I definitely thought "That seems high" when I saw it.

^^This. Medvedeva is going to win this event anyway. And it's not like Kaetlyn is the favourite to win gold at Pyeongchang. Wish people would just take a chill pill and enjoy good skating. There was literally nothing to dislike objectively about Kaetlyn's performance, except maybe a ! call on her lutz. She has big jumps, excellent spins, an engaging performance quality, and good steps. It just saddens me that people are so fuelled by hate that it clouds their vision.

It's just and great that any skater get the marks for their performance of the night or day.

It amazes me that you think judges should consider earlier performances and how hard other competitors have worked when they score a performance.

Ooh, I disagree with the notion that skaters must demonstrate consistency across competitions in order to receive higher scores, and so does the scoring criteria published by the ISU ;). Agree to disagree?

I do completely understand the frustration with the judges being extremely inconsistent in their decisions to give X skater a high score for a "breakout" performance and to only begin giving Y skater a high score once they have been consistent across competitions. Audience response/home ice seems to play a role.

I do think age plays a role as well. Kaetlyn isn't just up from juniors, and the judges have wanted to reward her for awhile, but she's dealt with injury. To the best of her ability, she's "put her time in" at the senior level and she does genuinely have all the qualities to be a star - even though she hasn't WOWED me yet, she is excellent in every area the judges are supposed to score.

Her SP definitely has the potential to be a WOW moment for me, but I just want to see a little more grit in her skating to Edith Piaf. It's ambitious music that she hasn't expressed to its full potential yet because of its nuance. (It's a shame her LP is so generic.)

It seems like some people are confused as to how the judging system works. Do you think the judges all have a document beside them listing every single score that every skater has obtained in the past, and when they see that the score from today's skate is the best that skater has ever achieved, they're supposed to say: "Nope, that score is much too too high! Knock that bad boy down by ten points!"

Seriously, what's the point of even having a competition? Let's just rank the skaters by their previous results and call it a night!

I guess it would save on all the time spent flying around the world - and it's accompanying jet lag.

So what's the point of the ranking?

That is not how this sport worked for the past two years at least, and the level of the inflation on the men is way worse just because Javi and Yuzuru are so consistent over the years.

But just to be clear: Kaetlyn was great here, well deserved the second place and the personal best, just the score is too high in my opinion.

There is another problem. The score of 65 seems okay at first, but Satoko is used to higher scores by now. The judges were willing to go with her and awarded her 70 something scores. If this had been NHK she might have cracked 70 with the same skate. It's the expectation. It's confusing. To be honest, I never understood these high scores, but as I don't skate myself I thought, well, she is consistent and does the things she can and jumps as high as her body type allows. But now the judges say, nay, we don't like that anymore. And then present these scores. It seems like a failure when it really isn't, because these scores are still okay. All of this isn't Satoko's fault. It's the judges for obviosuly throwing the dice. Who knows what to do and what to work on if you always get rewarded? At least things get interesting in Japan's ladies field, I hope.

Agree that technical specialists need to make up their minds on what they'll call. Then again, maybe Satoko's jumps weren't around today and are around on others?

Disagree on the bolded. Girls smaller than Satoko jump higher.
