Legend of Two Old Guys With a Mustache is an awesome song name. :)

That's a Finnish song "Vanhoja poikia viiksekkäitä", quite well-known waltz. It tells about two old guys with a mustache: an old man and an old Saimaa ringed seal (which is very rare endangered species, there are only ca 320 individuals in lake Saimaa in Finland, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saimaa_ringed_seal). The name has two meanings: old guys like they are old. But "old guy" means in Finnish also an old man who hasn't get married.

Susanna Pöykiö had that music in her sp during season 09-10. I wonder where Ivett Toth found this music and this version. This version is played by the famous Finnish jazz band Trio Töykeät (arranged by Iiro Rantala) and it's not really the most traditional version. This is the version people know better: https://youtu.be/M9x52lMMk1g. I don't get the connection with Toth's music choices: jazz waltz and Aretha Franklin...:scratch2:

She's skating to music about a rare species of seal? Fascinating!

I love seals, so this explanation makes me very happy.

And even if someone legitimately had to take something like that for a frequent medical issue, there's a lot of risks involved. Pre-emptively taking a medicine for something that the skater thinks could happen, but hasn't encountered before is incredibly risky. Side effects could occur, and some medicines really should only be taken after the fact (like medically inducing clotting after bleeding issues may be necessary, but preemptively inducing clotting before an issue occurs could have fatal effects)
I think I've heard somewhere there are some sprays that are used for nose bleeding - I just Googled, they do exist. But I have no idea if they could be used during the competition and if they do not contain medicins that are prohibited due to doping restrictions. It's a local remedy, not a medicine you have to take with water or through injection, my god, I can't even imagine how risky that could have been.
You know, if those sprays aren't prohibited- why they did not have it at the rink? I mean- she was helped by a medical person wasn't she?

I wasn't suggesting anybody use a blood clotting medication, I was asking if it existed. We all know many drugs are dangerous, but are often used in sports anyway.

Her SP is always underscored this season, i think judges don't like this style, maybe too mature for juniors.

yep, in her SP she always gets low pcs

but her FS is very good
hopefully she skates clean tommorow, she has a chance to win

Wakaba has made huge improvements on her spins, and her jumps remind me of Midori Ito. And approps of nothing-I love that costume. (But the costume award, IMO goes to Marin Honda...breathtakingly beautiful dress)

Aren't Alisa and Dmitri Aliev dating? They're both first in their respective disciplines after SP! :cool2:

Rules are the same for all ISU Championships except 4CC (where all Members can send 3 skaters/couples).
Rule 378.
For all who did not qualify to FS - 18 points, for qualified to FS if total place lower than 16th - 16 points, otherwise number of points equal to total place.
For 3 spots - if one skater 1 or 2 points, if 2 or 3 - sum of two best not more than 13 points.
For 2 spots - if one skater - top ten, if 2 or 3 - not more than 28 points.

Chemistry's question was what happens if there are two skaters and both make the FS, but one of them doesn't do the FS because they WD...so would that injured skater get 16 points and the other skater has to finish in top 12?

I made a very poor translation of the song with no poetry but it tells the story of the song. The story is quite sad. I wonder if Ivett Toth knows it ;)

There's a tiny cottage in the island of lake Saimaa
Nestori Miikkulainen is sitting on the stairs
He is playing the harmonica
And the seal is surfacing with a splash

He swam towards the player below a wave
The melody is more than familiar to him
Song tells what is to stay alone
The seal understands it very well

They never danced Nestori's wedding
The world took away his fiancee
The old guys with a mustache
The man and the seal are both

There's a little cottage in the island of Saimaa
Life-companion didn't want to come there
Nestori stayed alone like the seal
The destiny took also his mate

Big Saimaa but there are only one hundred seal
Soon there will be no one left
Miikkulainen is playing the harmonica
He understands the yearning

They never danced Nestori's wedding
The world took away his fiancee
The old guys with a mustache
The man and the seal are both

There's a tiny cottage in the island of Saimaa
Nestori Miikkulainen is sitting on the stairs
The old seal is resting on his rock
And he is looking his friend and he understands

Big Saimaa but it's not possible
To find a woman from its shores
to live in this windy island

Like the seal also Miikkulainen
is forced to be
The last of their families

They never danced Nestori's wedding
The world took away his fiancee
The old guys with a mustache
The man and the seal are both

Chemistry's question was what happens if there are two skaters and both make the FS, but one of them doesn't do the FS because they WD...so would that injured skater get 16 points and the other skater has to finish in top 12?

However the Competitors who withdrew because of:
- illness or injury, (provided this illness or injury is certified by the ISU Medical Advisor) or
- unexpected damage to the equipment during the warm up or the performance (provided this damage of the equipment is certified by the Referee),
are not considered as entered for the purpose of this Rule if they did not start or finish the Free Skating/Free Dance, but were among the top ten (10) in the Short Program/Short Dance.

I think what the language above means:

If the injured skater finished in the top ten in the SP, then it's as if s/he had not competed at all (in terms of placement points).

So if the country had started with two skaters, only the second skater's placement points would count. The second skater would need to place at least tenth overall for two spots; and at least second overall for three spots.

Ladies SP review

As you guys might have noticed, the ladies are my favorite discipline and therefore watching them skate for about seven hours has been a great joy. Sadly, only 24 could qualify today and quite a few good kids, were left in the cold.
Teenagers, such as Elizaveta Ukolova who skated quite well this season, but also Danielle Harrison and Matilda Algotsson, who are such expressive skaters and sadly not in the final tomorrow.

In said final, however, are my kids! Alizee who came 21th, Lea who achieved rank 18 and Anastasiia who only missed the final two groups by one place, coming 13th. More about their performances at their fan threads a bit later.

I think that the right person is on top and it was very wise, to not kick her from said position, not just because of me hunting those people down that would dare to do such a thing, no it´s more about the judging and that whole "bonus" that late starters can receive at times and gladly the 14 years old from St. Petersburg, was not punished too hard for her early number, today.
Alisa Fedichkina, achieved 66.11 points, with 27.95 in PCS, the second best score for the components today and honestly, if she had started later, the score would have been much higher for sure, but as I said, the judges did not give anyone more, except the Japanese, who also scored 66.11 in combined total, but lays second due to a lower TES. Overall a good and fair result, well handled by the judges.

That being said, Alisa for me, was a class of her own in the short, with smooth & effortless skating, enchanting movements and great interpretation skills with all these lovely pictures that she had created, today and it surely deserved a bit more at least for INT and CH.
Besides that, it was a flawless program with level fours on all her elements and nice balance, starting with the double Axel, while adding her triple Lutz – triple Toe combination and the triple Flip after her stepsequence, which is not easy to do, as steps need to be attacked and will drain your power and attention for the next element.

In general, we can say that two skating worlds did collide today. Alisa with the very cute and calm programs and Maria Sotskova with her sexy and mature skate, coming third with 64.78 points and also the Lutz – Toe and Flip jumps, however, missing out on her levels quite a bit.
As much I understand people who favor one style and therefore either argue for or against Maria, we must consider that Alisa really nailed her performance today, being 0.05 points below her PB from October, last year. The early starting number was a big disadvantage, yet she didnt give in and absolutely skated with great charme and interpretation, lovely aligned to the phrasing of music, no matter if the bird flew away or just landed in her heart, it was always kept safe and protected - a really nice detail that fits so well, to this so called "effortless" skating that judges want to see.

The Russian has what I find so fascinating about the Russian school of artistry, it´s very back to basics, great ballet arms, smooth movements and footwork, always performing, never standing still and she even had a twizzle in her step sequence and I really enjoyed the entry´s like with the Axel, no telegraphing there, but still presenting her element with grace and confidence. From my point of view, she is a wonderful personality on ice, you just like watching her and I hope she can skate another of those flawless performances tomorrow.

As for Maria, she was a sexy lady today and I disagree with, that her style, would not fit the juniors. I think, it´s absolutely on the money and she greatly performed to Black Magic Woman by Santana. As mentioned with the pairs yesterday, you want to be positive and present on the ice, heads up with open arms, covering the whole surface, letting everyone know it´s you they should look at and who didn´t want to look at such a beautiful skater today?
Her movements and turns, were very elegant with a seductive look in her face and yet, she was not over the top, like you know – women that fell into the make up box or are super annoying to us guys, being extremely flirty and aggressive, I so hate that, as it makes me run all the time. :eeking:

Her run will hopefully continue tomorrow when she will skate to Romeo and Juliet and I am very curious about that!Marin Hondo, came as mentioned second, with a weaker TES and triple loop – triple Toe, but equally good steps and spins, performing to Spring Sonata No. 5. Her skate was very similar to Alisa, good use of the various tempo and calm expression in her face, but I have to say that the Russian just grabbed me a bit more, especially her interpretation and the choreography.

Tomorrow we will have a wonderful battle of Julia (Maria), Beetlejuice (Marin) and a cat (Alisa) and if all goes well, they should divide the medals among them.

Not much of a chance for a medal do other skaters have and yet, they absolutely added to the short program today. Ivett Toth the local hero, what a gorgeous lady and performance, or Kyarha van Tiel with these great jumps, but also expression and of course Angelina Kuchvalska who came 6th with 57.92 points, skating to Tosco with gret athletism and grace. I love it, if skaters really push their second jump in a combination and Angelina went even higher than with the first triple Toe, same did Tyler Pierce, but she sadly missed her triple Flip and "only" came 7th with 56.56 points. Best American is Bradie Tennel, on 4th with 58.56 points and an almost perfect program with good expression and at least one million turns and spins in her step sequence. ;)

Elizabet Tursynbaeva was punished really hard today, for a nose bleed that cost her five points deduction, plus one that she suffered for the missed landing on the Lutz, which caused the bleed due the hard impact when she fell. She will definately show us all tomorrow, what she is capable off – it was one of those days, where heroes fall as our lovely Polina Tsurskaya injured her ankle this morning in practice and was therefore, unable to skate today.
While many dreams were cruashed today, always remember how young you are, nothing is lost yet and another chance will come soon. 30 is the age when you need to start worrying, as you begin to lose hair, teeth and other things ... so heads up girls and all the best to those competing tomorrow! :)

Didn't watch this live, but wow, what a wild competition! I won't do a full review for this but there were a lot of interesting things that happened.

First, it's interesting to see that the top 2 are tied with the exact same score! Nice to see such a coincidence. Both Alisa and Marin were great today also, and we'll be seeing a nice battle in the free.

I was shocked to see the clear gold medal favourite having to withdraw. I feel really bad for Polina, since this may have been her last competition of this season, yet she misses it due to an injury from that morning. I hope this injury will heal soon.

Now, about Elizabet...WOW. That -6 deduction is just downright STUPID. Okay, -1 for the fall, but why is stopping because of an uncontrollable nosebleed worth a 5 point deduction?! I know it took a pretty long time for her to get back to the performance, but I really think that a 2 or even 1 point deduction is more than enough. I don't understand why a skater has to be so harshly punished for something like this. I'm really disappointed for how the judging went. Anyway, good for her that she did manage to finish the program.
