Places 2-4 are very close. I would love to see Luca and Anna medal here. I love their FD! This scoring brings to light how critical it will be as to who will be the Tech Specialist at the Olympics and, to a lesser degree, the composition of the judging panel. Has that been decided yet?

Olympic Tech Panel for Ice Dance :

Referee: Ingrid-Charlotte WOLTER (GER)
Technical Controller: Hilary SELBY (GBR)
Technical Specialist and Assistant Technical Specialist: Slavka GRINCOVA (SVK), Tae-Hwa YANG (KOR)

This is the exact same Panel that judged Nebelhorn Trophy

Judge number 4 seemed to be directly paid by Didier Gailhaguet.

I do not get where all the 10s are coming from. Virtue/Moir's short Dance is better. Definitly better.

S/B's time has finally come. So great. To me it should have happend a year ago. Maybe there is a way to the Olympic Bronze.

Not every judge can see everything in real time (they must at least write the numbers down during skating)... Because of that we have 9 judges in the pannel :)

Yes, but again my first point applies. If a judge isn't totally sure that something was +3 level, should that be still awarded? I don't think so. And isn't there a possibility for judges to replay elements?

I was talking about the panel, not the judges, before the provisional TES went up.
Anyway, I was obviously wrong, since they are currently sitting in 4th place right now.
The support is now obvious towards Alexandra / Ivan, who are now magically equally scored on PCS to Anna/Luca and Katia/Dimitri (though their skill is much much lower but oh well)

Stepanova/Bukin scored higher than C/L & B/S because they simply skated better here than those two. I actually think GOEs are generous to those two teams. I also think the other italian team should be closer to those two teams.

regarding PCS, the way teams skated here no one should be getting 9s especially in PE, CO & IN since no one is close to even capturing the "theme" of the short dance.

Do honestly people think for example C/L, B/S or P/C who got 9s interpreted and showed the latin dance qualities in their programs than Hurtado/Khaliavin who got 7 & 8??

THIS!!!!, By the way the j4 who gave +3 to P/C for twizzles, gave +1 to Sara and Kirill :palmf:, but I guess nobody will investigate this judge :sarcasm:

^ for me 'Composition', 'Performance' and 'Interpretation' components for those SD are all over the place in general...but I have no professional knowledge, hence SD I enjoyed the most today were from Danes and Spaniards

Yeah, but latin dance qualities performed on the floor is one thing, while performing it in the ice rink on the skates is another... CO, PE and IN in figure skating have totally different meaning (cause all of them are based on your blades work)...

Well, I need to say three things.

1. I really missed Elena Ilinykh today. These women just don't have IT.
2. I hope we never see latin for a very, very, long time, or they need to change it.
3. Thankfully B/S were not held up, but the quality of European ice dance still lags behind the rest of the world with the exception of PC.

Things should be much more interesting in the FD tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if the positions remain the same.

On another side note, and not intended to bash anyone, Bukin needs to hit the gym. All this work on her basics and just maturity has caused Stepanova to bulk up/muscle up a bit. If he's not careful they will start to look unbalanced. Peace.

Tanith and Ben were very subtle with their B/S shade

They didn't need to be this team is just blander than bland. Zhulin has it hard with both his head case and these two. I hope he puts more effort into a good junior team for the next quad and H/K in the future. I like H/K. They know how to ice DANCE.

Well, i think its better to give a skater benefit of a doubt if you are not sure... if you think differently than ok, but to judge in a skater favour exists as a written recommendation for the judges ;) it's not an obligation tho

Their lifts are great and Luca projects really well but their basic SS is just blah.

So much toe picking just to gain speed. And their edges are mediocre. really go watch them and compare it to other teams how much they are using their toepicks.

They are very one dimensional with their programs but then again its working so I don't blame them for milking it. And they are really charming when they are spot on.
You mean the French teams or C/L?

I don't like P/C SD just as much as I love their FD. Guillaume in this...outfit is only thing I like about this program.

That's okay!

I was wondering if someone could explain why the two French teams had such low placements, because I don't really understand Ice Dance judging.

I was thinking about opening a thread called "IJS for beginners" because all statements like "how did they get a positive GOE when they had a touchdown!!!!" make me mad. Especially when people keep repeating it.

I don't know the answer to your question because I also don't know ice dance rules and levels (I was not an ice dancer), this is not a comment directed at you as your question is legitimate. Unlike a recent comment "how did they get a positive GOE with a mistake in their twizzle".

The problem is never why a positive GOE with a hand down. It's when one team/individual with a postive GOE and another with a negative GOE when they both had the hand down, difficult entry, nice height and distance.

I don't know if you were following the pairs FS thread yesterday, it very shortly turned out that the person making this particular comment (GOEs on throw jump) was not familiar with basic rules or the fact you deduct from a certain, possibly +3 GOE and not just award -1 for an element. A lot of time is lost on such discussions and they make general discussions difficult to follow.

What you wrote stands, of course, in cases when the quality of the element is exactly the same.
