Unlike four (and eight) years ago, there are very few entries from federations not competing for an Olympic berth. (The letter D next to entries in the post above indicates that these entries are not for Olympic qualification.)

Among the men, only Patrick Chan (Canada) and Alexander Johnson (USA) are not attempting to qualify. There are no men entered from Japan, China, or Russia (to name a few).

Among the ladies, only Lutricia Bock and Nathalie Weinzierl (both from Germany) are not attempting to qualify. There are no ladies entered from Japan, Russia, Canada, or the USA.

Five of the 17 pairs entries are not attempting to qualify their federations for the Olympics, including Savchenko & Massot (Germany) and Tarasova & Morosov (Russia).

Just two ice dance teams are not attempting to qualify--Sales & Wamsteeker (Canada) and Manta & Johnson (USA). Russia, Italy, and France are among the already-qualified federations not sending dance teams.

The total entries include 29 men, 38 ladies, 18 pairs, and 19 ice dance teams.

Let the predictions begin?? Which skaters are going to get those final spots for their nation.

My prediction for the men will be a fight for the last 6 among these 7:
Jorik Hendrikx (BEL), Ivan Righini (ITA), Julian Zhi Jie Yee (MAS), Michael Christian Martinez (PHI), June Hyoung Lee (KOR), Alexander Marjorov (SWE), Yaroslav Paniot (UKR)
I think it'll depend on the injury status of Righini and Marjorov. But if all skate to potential, I think Lee will probably be the odd one out for the chance at the OG in his home country.

For the ladies top 6:
I think Anastasia Galustyan (ARM) and Kailani Craine (AUS) are locks
Alexia Paganini has a good chance after switching from USA to SUI
Joshi Helgesson (SWE) and Amy Lin (TPE) have not been doing well
I'm going to group together Kerstin Frank (AUT), Viveca Lindfors (FIN), Natasha McKay (GBR), Anne Line Gjersm (NOR), Dasa Grm (SLO), Anna Khnychenkova (UKR)
I italicized who I think will prevail but so many of these skaters are up and down

Pairs is crazy competitive for the 4 spots:
Alexandrovskaya/Windsor (AUS), Ziegler/Keifer (AUT), Duskova/Bidar (CZE), Ryom/Kim (PRK) should get the spots
If any falter Suto/Audet (JPN)
Danilova/Kamianchuk (BLR), Butkute/Ermolaev (LTU), Kim/Kim (KOR) bring up the rest of the pack

Ice Dance (6) similar to men, a fight between the seven:
I predict Mansour/Ceska (CZE), Torn/Partanen (FIN), Lorenz/Polizoakis (GER), Coomes/Buckland (GBR), Muramoto Reed (JPN), Min/Gamelin (KOR), Mysliveckova/Csolley (SVK)

I am quite glad there aren't many skaters not competing for the Olympic Qualification event entered. Adding too many of them makes things a bit confusing.

Ice Dance (6):
I predict Mansour/Ceska (CZE), Torn/Partanen (FIN), Lorenz/Polizoakis (GER), Coomes/Buckland (GBR), Muramoto Reed (JPN), Mysliveckova/Csolley (SVK)

No Min/Gamelin in the mix?

This is Majorov in a recent national competition in Sweden:

Someone posted let predictions begin, so I gave my predictions. Nothing catty in any of my comments.

And yes, you are correct. I have missed Min/Gamelin. I will add them to my post.

Thanks for the unlisted video for Marjorov. He looks great for the start of the season!

I didn't want to imply you were catty.
I was just surprised you left them out from being at least in contention given the other names listed. Therefore I wondered if you simply forgot about them.

My attempt at predictions:

Ladies is particularly difficult to predict for me. Many are close on cards and some of them not exactly driven by consistency. Many will live or die depending not the performance of the day

On men, I agree with the names you suggested. Newberry or Walker could have hopes if they skate clean and the Martinez/Paniot/Lee group makes a splatfest.

Pairs, I agree with those 4. I was undecided between Ziegler/Keifer and Suto/BA for the last spot but the Japanese team have been very poor at recent regional event in Quebec (40 points behind the North Koreans).

On Ice Dance, maybe also the Armenians could have a chance for the 6th place (I assume Denmark will give back their spot raising the places given by Nebelhorn from 5 to 6)

I am sure I'm forgetting someone somewhere.

I'm very surprised Hong Kong didn't choose Yi Christy Leung even as a sub. She did very well at Junior Worlds last year. Is age eligible. and has an 3-3, albeit sometimes underrotated. She would actually stand a pretty good chance...

Did you see her performance at last week's JGP in Australia? She's dealing with growth issues and fell on so many jumps.

The entry list is now online. Links can be found at the OP.

There are no major surprises except for Patrick. The Ladies field looks very tight with 37 skaters and just two not fighting for an Olympic spot (Bock / Weinzierl) and it will be a very tough battle between the new kids on the block and the more experienced skaters. I will post my preview after the US Open,

until then. :)

P.S. ticket prices are also known (not sure if it was posted already).

It will be 55 Euro for an all event, including the Gala on Saturday. You can of course also just buy a daily ticket, seats are not numbered so a first come - first serve policy will apply. You can look at the venue by clicking this link here,

http://www.eissportzentrum-oberstdorf.de/webcam/

During competition, the seats behind the judges can be limited and be reserved for officials and members of the judges trials. The opposite site will be free for all ticket holders, except the very first block, which is for the athletes (who however, not always sit just there  )

Practice starts on early Wednesday and can also be witnessed without a ticket. Tickets can be picked up as usual at the ice rink.

Time to put in my predictions.......

*Mens*

Sweden (Alexander Majorov), Belgium (Jorik Hendrickx), Italy (Ivan Righini), Philippines (Michael Christian Martinez), Malaysia (Julian Zhi Jie Yee), Switzerland (Stephane Walker)

Other Strong Contenders: Ukraine (Yaroslav Paniot), Great Britain (Graham Newberry), Republic of Korea (June Hyoung Lee), Chinese Taipei (Chih-l Tsao), Croatia (Nicholas Vrdoljak), Estonia (Alexandr Selevko), Norway (Sondre Oddvolll Boe)

*Ladies'*

Australia (Kailani Craine), Armenia (Anastasia Galustyan), Sweden (Joshi Helgesson), Austria (Kirsten Frank), Finalnd (Viveca Lindfors), Switzerland (Alexia Paganini)

Other Strong Contenders: Brazil (Isadora Williams), Singapore (Shuran Yu), Great Britain (Natashi McKay), Norway (Anne Line Gjersem), Luxembourg (Fleur Maxwell), Ukraine (Anna Khnychenkova)

*Pairs*

This is interesting. This event is a toss up between 5 teams for 4 spots. Even though Japan's representatives here will not be able to compete at the Olympics (due to citizenship reasons), they will be there to compete in order that Japan can send another one of its pair teams to Pyeongchang.
One team will be heartbroken.

Czech Republic (Anna Duskova & Martin Bidar), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Tae Ok Ryom & Ju Sik Kim), Austria (Miriam Ziegler & Severin Kiefer), Japan (Sumire Suto & Francis Boudreau-Audet), & Australia (Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya & Harley Windsor)

*Ice Dance*

Great Britain (Penny Coomes & Nicholas Buckland), Japan (Kana Muramoto & Chris Reed), Germany (Kavita Lorenz & Joti Polizoakis), Republic of Korea (Yura Min & Alexander Gamelin), Czech Republic (Cortney Mansour & Michal Ceska)

Other Strong Contenders: Finland (Cecilia Torn & Jussiville Partanen), Slovakia (Lucie Mysliveckova & Luka Csolley), Armenia (Tina Garabedian & Simon Proulx-Senecal)

There are significantly fewer entries in both singles competitions than there were four years ago Perhaps some of the federations that know their skaters have no chance have decided against sending them. That at least makes breaking down the fields slightly easier. Breakdowns of all four Olympic qualifying competitions to follow.

That's twenty-six men competing for six spots, possibly seven if Misha Ge retires and Uzbekistan fails to replace him. Not all of them are likely to qualifying, but consider:

Jorik Hendrickx-The kind of skater you'd expect to be qualified already; he was at this time four years ago, but he just missed at Worlds
Ivan Righini-In all likelihood would've qualified at Worlds had he made it there
Julian Yee-Also came really close at Worlds; four points more would've done it
Michael Christian Martinez-Made it in four years ago, but struggling with consistency
Igor Reznichenko-Actually got swapped in for Kryzstof Gala just this week, after he trounced him and beat several other people on the roster in Slovenia; has broken 200 on the Challenger Series
June-Hyoung Lee-Shock winner at the Korean qualifier because their up-and-comer is very badly injured, but is capable of scoring high enough to get the berth in his stead
Alexander Majorov-Had no trouble getting in at Worlds four years ago, but he's having a rougher time now than he did then
Stephane Walker-Was in the mix to qualify four years ago and then skated badly in the free; still has the consistency issues
Yaroslav Paniot-Just up from juniors, had a good summer

Hendirckx, Righini, and Majorov seem very likely. For the other three, I'm going with Yee, Paniot, and Martinez, though I'm very hesitant on that last one. I suspect Lee might just miss and drive everyone crazy with confusion as to whether Korea's going to get a spot or not
