There are a thousand ways to build stamina, exercise at a gym, run laps around your rink, train for mini marathons, spend time on a stationary bike, jump rope, swim laps, things serious athletes should be doing, in addition to run throughs.
At the end of the day, all those things help your fitness, but the thing that makes you able to skate the whole program through is running the program regularly. It needs to be in your muscles. The physicality of skating is hard to replicate off ice.
