This is not a random start order, is it?
Because if it's not, I think that Mai should definitely be in the last group, with either Yura or Rika in the second to last group...

Don't think it was a random draw. I was trying to locate the document by JSF about drawing of starting order earlier today (remember reading it somewhere from twitter) but couldn't find it. After searching from twitter, I can only find info about drawing: so roughly the last two groups (12 skaters), which consist of: seeded skaters (incl. Mai), GP skaters (special strengthened athletes) and skaters placing top from sectionals, draw together as a pool.

There was a draw (it was live streamed on youtube, but I only saw a little bit of it. Maybe a fan-posted copy will appear, if not an official archive)...

But it seemed that the skaters were "grouped" as you described, and they were only drawing for the order within their own group? So yeah, only "partly" random...

What an odd grouping. I feel very bad for Mai, she deserves better. Also, this thing - I think that junior success should count for something for ladies. It's not like a successful junior lady will have to step into an entirely different world - The junior competition tends to be extremely demanding technically and they almost do senior programs anyway. Someone like Kihira should not be skating so early.

I hope Wakaba skates well and then I hope Sakamoto, Mihara or Honda... Actually, wow those groups. Well, go Honda go, I guess.

Looks like being a national bronze medalist, 4CC champ, and top 5 at Worlds hasn't helped Mai at all with this grouping.

Best of luck to all the ladies! Sending extra special good vibes to my absolute faves Wakaba and Kaori, and for my favorite underdog Rika Hongo! Can't wait to see how it all plays out! Kill it out there girls!

As can be seen in the pre-event info thread, along with Satoko and Wakaba, she was one of only three "seeded" skaters coming in, so I doubt that it's anything shady—just bad luck.

Judge panel for ladies: http://www.jsfresults.com/National/2017-2018/fs_j/nationalsenior/data0230.htm

TC Ayumi Kozuka(小塚 あゆみ)
TS Makoto Okazaki (岡崎 真)
ATS 河井 雅子

Referee Kenji AMAKO (尼子健二)

(NB:hm...Did I just read a commentary by Makoto Okazaki on the new rink and how the ice condition may be the key to performance? It's funny I made the random comment month before that perhaps JSF should ask Okazaki to serve as TS again...memory from All Japan National 2014, ladies...)

'スポーツナビ フィギュアスケート編集部‏' on twitter (@sn_figure) is providing some info about pre-competition practices and SP run through, I'm translating some of their reports here:

Mai: 3Lz-3T, 2A, 3F, all jumps landed with run through and jumps were secure; speed picking-up throughout the Stsq
Kaori: 3F-3T, 3L, 2A, all jumps in the 2nd half and huge jumps
Wakaba: seemed to miss combo, but attached a 2T to 3F in the end
Satoko: 3Lz-3T, 3L, 3A, in good condition [Correction: it was 2A]
Yuna: seemed to miss combo and also attached a 2T to 3F
Rika: seemed to struggle with jumps, 2F, and a fall on 3Lz (but landing 3F-3T and 3Lz outside runthrough)
Marin: combo okay (3F-3T?) but 2L and 1A to follow

Good luck, ladies!

Any news on Yuka Nagai? I haven't seen her skate at all this year.

Good luck to all the ladies! :hap10:
