Me too, and I guess dinner at restaurants at Gangneung will be expensive, I am already thinking to purchase some food from Seoul before I get to Gangneung, so that we could cook a bit at where we live

I’m planning to pack emergency instant noodles. One thing I can count on while staying in Asia is that almost anywhere you stay there will be a water boiler.

* I used "HOMEPLUS Gangeung" (홈플러스 강릉) during the 4CC last year. It was a shopping mall with a full grocery section, near the KTX station. You can google it. They will be closed on February 14th. By the law, large shopping malls should be closed at least twice per month.

* Another shopping mall is "E-MART Gangneung" (이마트 강릉) near the beach. They will be also closed on February 14th.

* Gangneung downtown is full of convenience stores.

Hi. Does Gangneung have a shopping area? And are clothes expensive? I'm from a really tropical country and since 'winter' has ended here no one is selling affordable winterwear anymore. So I'm now thinking that I could just wear what I have and buy my clothes over there.

* In Korea, the winter clothing season is nearly at the end, too. I posted two shopping malls here. I hope they still carry winter clothes when you arrive in Gangneung:

* ETD: If you have some free time in Seoul, you can check Myeong-dong (명동) near Seoul Station. They have fast fashion brand shops such as Uniqlo, H&M, and Mango. Also there are many shopping malls.

* However, most Koreans either do internet shopping or go to fast fashion brands. The clothes at the department stores are usually overpriced, so one has to wait for sales at the end of the season.

There is a rumor among Korean fans that the Organizers relaxed the limit of tickets you can purchase per session from 4 to 50 at the website. Right now I'm out of South Korea, so I cannot confirm it by myself.

That's good to hear. Thank you! Also, by closed on February 14th you mean for that day only right?

Yes, only that day. However, there could be some change of plan due to the New Year Holiday. Unfortunately, I'm out of country, so it's not easy to check that.

Like seabm7 said, hours can shift around a lot (and without notice) during the holiday period (14th - 18th). However, with lots of people traveling to Seoul I would assume many places will still be open (especially in tourist-friendly shopping areas). Definitely plan on shopping in Seoul (if you can) before heading out to Pyeongchang!

Thanks Seabm7 for the information about supermarkets ~ I really don’t know what to expect, since I have never been there before. :thank: I will pack some noodle just like what kiches suggested, but definitely need place to purchase veggies.

Maybe don’t wait until you get to Gangneung, Seoul is 0 degrees to -15 degree this week, Gangneung is similar too, for sure you have more options in Seoul.

I’ve been checking the weather on my app and Seoul always appears colder than Gangneung, so I would try to get something before you even arrive in Korea if possible.

Hello everyone!

This is my first Olympics and this thread has been very helpful. I decided to create an account to ask you a question. Has anyone heard of ebus&van? Apparently it is a free shuttle service from Seoul to Pyeongchang & Gangneung. I downloaded the app but for some reason I can't verify my phone (maybe it's because it is not a number from Korea?). Anyone know if this is legit?

They have the telephone number and e-mail address at the bottom of https://www.ebusnvan.com/. Right now I'm out of South Korea, so I cannot call them and ask for more details.

Thanks for all te answers :luv17: However, I'm skipping uni to go to the events and I'm planning to stay in Korea for 4 days max. and it's left no room for me to make a stop in Seoul before Gangneung :sad21: I might try Incheon airport if I have time before getting on the train.

I see. The following is the information on the shopping center at Seoul Station and Uniqlo Gangneung, just in case someone needs it.

* Lotte Outlet is next to the main building of Seoul Station. The outdoor clothing is at the 4th floor. Lette Outlet closes on February 16th.
http://store.lotteshopping.com/handler/publicCtr_F-mapstart?subBrchCd=057

* If you go though the parking building after Lotte Outlet, the last building is Lotte Mart. Uniqlo is at the 3rd floor. Lotte Mart at Seoul Station closes on February 11th and 25th.

* Uniqlo Gangneung. 2 km distance from Gangneung Station

Finally I booked the lodging: a new Golden Tulip hotel. Interesting that Cosport offered it me in October for $3600 a night, regular room. I cannot say that $900 that I had to pay via booking.com is a steal. But it's hard to deny that the difference is amazing.

OMG. Even $900 a night is a tremendous price!

Bus btw Gangneung Station & Olympic Park

After the Olympic Organizers announced shuttle service between Gangneung Station and the Olympic Park would be limited, Gangneung City adjusted their bus services to fill the gap.

No. 200, 200-1, and 300 will do additional stop at the Olympic Park region during the Olympics period.

* From Gangneung Station to the Olympic Park (= direction to Jumunjin) :

No. 300 (100 times per day. 07:00 ~ 22:30)
No. 202-1 (29 times per day)

* From the Olympic Park Entrance to Gangneung Station (= direction to downtown) :

No. 202 (32 times per day)

note) No. 300-1 and 300-2 stop at the Olympic Park Entrance, but they do not go to Gangneung Station. Instead they stop at Gangneung Girls' High School, which is 700 m away from Gangneung Station.

The Olympic Park stop and the Olympic Park Entrance stop are two different stops. Here is the detailed map. Red line is from Gangneung Station to the Olympic Park. Blue line is from the Olympic Park Entrance to Gangneung Station.

강릉올림픽파크: The Olympic Park
강릉올림픽파크 입구: The Olympic Park Entrance

시내방향: direction to downtown
주문진방향: direction to Jumunjin

Jumunjin is a port at the Northern end of Gangneung.

* The following site is in Korean, but at least you can check the bus route by entering the bus number. The bus number options will come up. Click the green colored bus number. The corresponding route will pop up.

I agree. We shall stay a night in Seoul's 4 seasons for just $350. I am sure that once the games are over the room at Tulip will not cost more than that. But now it's the only 5 star hotel near the Olympic park.

Thank you seabm7 for the info on ebusnvan. I did contact them and they sent me a message. I think they created an account for me but I still can't make reservations. I sent them an email again, let's see what they say :)
