After seeing the mascot character skating tonight...I feel incredibly sad that the Saitama Super Arena mascot didn't skate at Worlds this year (though it was outside the building sometimes)...

i guess inflation is a worldwide problem. i mean... i just did my grocery shopping and there was something i used to buy for 9.99 that is 13.49 now... RD now can score 93 points :)
I find this really annoying but I guess with other world atrocities we just need to sweat the real issues. I don't think every team that becomes world champion is an iconic, overly special, GOAT or legend skater/team. There has to be some peaks and valleys. I give full credit to Chock and BAtes developing/evolving their programs this year. And they maxed out both programs - though I don't agree on the costume choices necessarily. Chock is a great diva but certainly no better than Bestimianova, Krylova, Navka, Klimova, Usova, Anasinna, or the ability of Davis and Moir. They are wonderful entertainers but their tech probably is not as good as the Italians. And their free program as a concept welll they tried to patch it up and did a great job but there is only so much you can do with a "dud" And they have maxed it out. I appreciate the scoring system GOE's and even changing value of elements or the elements themselves has created some of the odd socring. World records really mean nothing in skating now unless you compare it to the "time" Even then each event has a different tech specialist and judging panel so that effects score. It is "bad" enough they are in first (in general at this point going by worlds and here I would have Italy first in RD and CB and the Canadians almost tied in the RD and going by worlds I would have Piper and Paul in the free (going by worlds now) and then CB and Italy. But give them first but do not give them scores that puts them in the league or the notion they are GOAT like PC; VM; DW, Torvill and Dean or the numerous Russians/Soviets. On a side note; I am disappointed that the Canadians didn't learn from worlds. How this season turned so badly for them (I appreciate she had surgery) and I was hoping they would have learned the tech issues/levels and maybe the lack of GOES on lifts they would have done something drastic. They actually overall probably have the best programs.

I watched this live before bed and found it really enjoyable. No major errors, only really noticeable one I saw was Piper's twizzle and that was rather minor. So good job to all the teams! I think they all looked relaxed and less stressed in this fun team environment and it led to fun programs! Kudos to Lim & Quan for creating a new RD here and performing it well! And I thought Madi and Evan looked better than ever!

Hope it carries over to the free dances and we get more clean and wonderful performances!

I do honestly try to stay focused during Charlene and Marco's performances, but I always find myself zoning out. I didn't find their program engaging at all until the final seconds. They are very technically sound, but I just do not find them to be interesting performers.
That's one of the reasons I love figure skating - different people see different things in the same performances. For me, I find Charlene and Marco's performances really engaging, and am always transfixed. Whereas I mostly zone out for Chock and Bates.

I know Chock and Bates have their detractors. I've been one of those myself from time to time.

But that was brilliant. Very entertaining.

I don't know if it's the confidence of being a WC, or whether it's because of a no pressure event... but whatever it is, I don't think I have ever seen Evan skate like that. He still doesn't match her for charisma and star power (and few could), but he's also not just along for the ride with her doing all the heavy lifting performance-wise.

I give them CB credit; they do have the swagger of champions. It is often hard to match the attitude of a Diva so I understand Evan's predicament. It was very entertaining but I don't think the judges had to go overboard on the score. BUt there are others who will say this is a masterpiece and virtue and moir, pc, this is up to your skating. To me a big no for this program. But it doesn't matter what I think.

I agree. A world record score for the RD is ridiculous. There is no way that they were 4.5 points better than Piper & Paul No way.

I enjoyed Chock & Bates program, and I really did not like it at Skate America. Also, it was better than Worlds -it is amazing how much better a team can skate when they do not have the stomach flu.

:rolleye:
If Virtue and Moir or Papadakis & Cizeron were skating without a pattern in the RD, with a choreo move, and higher max GOE allowed, as this year's rules stipulate, they would likely have scored higher than Chock & Bates. You cannot compare numerical scores from different years because the Rules are Different, and the max score is different.

Although the Italians make very precise steps, they are rather rhythmically challenged. That's why the first half of the program was set to music with a beat so irregular that even a Japanese audience, the best at clapping in the world, cannot figure out whether to clap on the upbeat or the downbeat. (like this discussion )

Seeing them sandwiched between Piper & Paul and Maddy & Evan reveals their problems quite clearly

I think Piper & Paul are still not recovered to GPF level, sad to say. They appeared a little slow (which they are not generally). But they did look like they were enjoying the skate!
