I have a newbie question—where do you get the country flags to cheer the skaters? Do you bring them from home or buy them at the arena? What is a good source?

I usually buy them at home, because I know places where I can get them cheaper than abroad.
I haven't really seen flags to buy at figure skating competitions but I've only been at Euros and Junior Worlds before so it may be different at senior Worlds.

Apart from a couple of flags I already have, I'd also like to buy new flags for Worlds, probably small ones. I think I'll buy them in a shop or if I don't find the ones I need I'll order online.

I bring them from home too. I've been to competitions in many different countries... but don't recall seeing country flags for sale at the arenas... except occasionally for the home country, but those were just very small souvenir-type hand-waving flags on sticks.

I buy online/mail-order from a specialist flag shop in my own country. I find 3ft by 2ft flags are a good size for "visibility", and ideal for a single person (while in your seat, you easily can hold it up without intruding much into your neighbours space). Bigger flags are more "noticable", and perhaps better for big arenas... but may need a friend or partner to help hold it up. But then again... two people, each holding their own 3' x 2' flag, might be equally "noticable"...

For certain flags I also find it helpful to write the word "top" in small letters... in the middle of the top edge, on the back of the flag. Then, if I can see that word when I hold up the flag... I can be sure I'm holding it the right way up, and not back to front... :-D

I now have flags for at least 14 different countries to choose from, depending on which of my favourites will be at a given competition... :-D For World's, I might need all of them...!

I was way too lazy to look for shops, so I just got my flags from amazon  the "big ones" I have are 60x90cm and those work just fine. For one person I think that's more than enough.

It reminds me of a group of people at GPF sitting near me with a bag full of flags, I'm fairly sure they had one for every single skater.

So, I am happy to announce that I just bought tickets for the short dance. Some good ones are definitely still available because I got tickets in block 111 which is definitely good as it is on the judges side. I am very, very excited as this is my first big event to attend (I have only attented JGP Riga - can't complain though, I have autographs and pictures with Evgenia Medvedeva, Shoma Uno, Boyang Jin and others - of course, they are taken when they all weren't that famous and I even got to talk to them a bit :) ).
On January 25th I will celebrate 5 years of being a crazy figure skating fan and this seems to be the greatest gift to get.
I have some questions:
1. Is the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki usually on time? I am expected to be in Helsinki at 9:30 and short dance starts at 11. I should be able to make it on time, shouldn't I?
2. Is the starting order in SD completely random or like "Warm-Up Group 1,2&3" and "Warm-Up Group 4&5" kind of random?
3. For fans who have already attended these kinds of competitions - many seats in block 108,109,110 are marked as VIP - are they usually full or not crowded? I totally wouldn't mind going to better seats if possible :D
4. I am a totally outgoing person regarding autographs and photos - so how big is the chance to meet someone if I'm not going to be in the official hotel, only in arena?
5. Where do the press conferences and small medal ceremonies take place? I remember in Nice or London the ceremonies took place in a mall? Are any of these open to the public? I would probably faint if I saw Tessa and Scott right next to me...

Hello :)
you can always try the For Sale section of the forum. Either make your own thread and ask if anyone's selling tickets for the ladies' FS, or check the existing threads and ask there.
Good luck!

Posted today on the official website:

2017 Worlds said:
Ticket sales for the Worlds 2017 competition have exceeded expectations. Over 46 000 tickets have been sold for the event, which begins in late March, already reaching 70% of the sales objective at the moment. Tickets for the Men’s and Ladies’ free program events are sold out and there are only a finite number of tickets left for the ice dance free program event.

”We are very satisfied with the situation. Even though some events are already sold out, it is still possible to attend them by purchasing a VIP package. For the short program events, there are still tickets available”, says Henri Nordenswan, Secretary General of the organizing committee.

Wow, I didn't realize the VIP tickets were available for 'normal' purchase, i.e. not for companies.
So I guess if you're desperate enough, you can bag yourself a men's or ladies' free skate or free dance ticket in one of the VIP seats for just 346 euros... taxes *and* food included.
I suppose everything's available for the right price. :rolleye:

I know there are several of us on here who would like to buy ice level tickets for the men's and ladies free if they become available. What do you think are the chances? I'm wondering if I should buy Balcony 2 for the men's just in case they sell out. Or do you think that will be easy to get closer to the event? I'm not quite ready to spend so much for VIP tickets, but maybe I will change my mind.

According to the news of the website, tickets for the Men’s and Ladies’ free program events are sold out :scratch2:
There are alwayspeople who sell their tickets due to various reasons, but that's risky..and it's shortly before the event so I guess you don't want to leave it that late?

If you have the possibility to the get a Balcony 2 ticket then I advise you to get it. I am sure it is fun enough to watch it from a distance too (you can see the ice coverage of the skaters). A binocular is needed though ;)

Thanks. The news piece did say that, but when I went to the ticket sales site to check there were still Balcony 2 tickets available for the men. I was going to risk it and wait for sellers right before the event, but now I'm getting nervous.

I got balcony 2 for the men's free as well, do you really think I'm going to need a binocular? Because 1. I have glasses so it's not super comfortable to use it 2. I only have a gigantic one for like birdwatching (I have no idea how that ended up in my house), or a super old tiny one that belonged to my grandma and is for watching opera/ballet

At balcony, you might see giant TV screens right in front of you. You can have bird's eye view of arena and close up on the TV screen at the same time.
I was at balcony at Boston for dance and pair, it wasn't too bad and because of the TV screen, I didn't need binocular.

If you want to see the TV screen then you don't need a binocular. :) But if you want to watch the skater during the program (later the slow mo on the TV screen) then I think the super old tiny binocular would be very useful. ;)
I will have a small binocular just in case, I think I will need them. I don't want to watch the TV screen all the time.

I wouldn't want to risk it so I bought them...

I bought my tickets in October, I didn't want to wait so long because put it me really nervous :drama: I wanted to buy better places but we're two persons and it's very expensive for us :sad4: (plus the flight and the accommodation). So I bought tickets in balcony 1 (men SP and FS, Gala) and balcony 2 (ladies, pairs and dance FS. Not short programs here, too much FS for my husband ). I have a small binocular, it didn't come to my mind bring it, but it's a good idea :agree:

I've always brought binoculars because it's fun to check out other things going on in the arena--coaches reacting, famous retired skaters in the audience, skaters on their off days watching teammates--all sorts of things!
