As for Ashley Wagner's acting skills on the ice, if you call smirking acting, then she should get an Academy award! She does have very expressive eyes though!

She has approximately two faces:

1) the stank face anytime she wants to show how fierce she is
2) her token poignant face anytime slow music comes on to show depth

Still fabulous though.

Ashley does much more than smirk. Particularly in her Moulin Rouge FS (when the music changes to "Someday I'll Fly Away"). Also, her Muse FS is especially poignant for me because of her "acting" on ice--she builds a story.

Funny how personal taste comes into play here. Ashley is sort of like Zhenia in a polarizing sort of way. Some people enjoy Zhenia and her dramatic interpretation on the ice while others are not impressed by it and in similar fashion Ashley presents her own brand of theatrics that resonates with some but not all. Russian vs American dramatics scaled up to the maximum level. Me personally.....I don't consider either to be great actors and instead would just suggest they have extremely dramatic facial expressions and some people like that sort of thing.

Personal taste does come into play to a point...But I'm saying she does much more than "smirk"... saying that all she does is "smirk" is simply not true, regardless of one's opinion of Ashley and her acting.

I think we should exclude ice dancers since most of them are better actors/actress than single skaters.

Ladies: Evgenia is definitely a good one. Good acting needs to look genuine, natural and looks you are not actually "acting," but still communicating something.
Ashley is easily in the "over acting" category. Her facial expression is mostly dramatically frown, not much else.

Men: Jason Brown.
Javi seems to act well with Latin dance and Chaplin, not sure about other genres.

Why some people just pick skaters who often do comical programs?

Áshley is quite good actor I think. But she is more like theatrical. Good male actor? I can think of John Curry.

And please this whole main cast of Carmen on ice, no doubt: https://youtu.be/vzhlakB6CEA

Meh disagree.

Zhenya's programs are more storytelling, Ashley express more a mood of a program giving some faces or poses but it's not exactly a story behind the program. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but that one is not truly acting to me.

Press conference at the Olympic Games in Ulan-Bator 2054

Plushenko: Big thanks to everybody who supported me. Without you there wouldn’t be these 100 Olympic medals.

Reporter: Evgeni, will you be participating in the next Olympic Games in 2058 in Bagdad?

Plushenko: It’s important to end your career in your peak form. Apart from that it’s important to make way for the young. However, I’m only 72 years old, that’s why, OF COURSE, I will be participating in 2058.

Reporter: Evgeni, which disciplines will you be taking part in?

Plushenko: Most likely, I’m going to step down from the individual events. As far as team-events go…likewise. But among the Android-class I will try to repeat my accomplishments from today's Olympic Games. Moreover I’m preparing a new element: I’m going to spin in the air without touching the ground for three minutes. I call it the “Plushel”.

Reporter: Evgeni, how are you going to combine all that with your job?

Plushenko: Most likely, I’m going to my resign from my position as the Minister of Sports, but at the end of the day, Julia Vyacheslavovna Lipnitskaya could always replace me in that position. All in all, Russia: Just wait for victory at the next Winter Olympics in Bagdad! Thank you. Always yours, Evgeni Plushenko.

Is that the program where his pants had light's on them? It was......How old was he when did this program? I can't believe he still had that back flip and those big jumps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqX4JSKU8oA

He was in his late 30's when he skated to this one, and he still had his hair! I also really liked when he did his "Hair" & ballet program ("Don Quixote") in SOI. He wore the ballet tights for that one! :laugh2:

Women: Mao Asada and Lu Chen- natural and genuine expression merged with with elegant and athletic steps and body movement full of powerful emotional resonance that is authentic
Midori Ito- if the goal of a performer is to move someone emotionally then I have to put her in the great acting category, not as elegant but powerfully expressive and genuine

Men: Evgeni Plushenko, Philippe Candeloro and Yuzuru Hanyu

I thought I posted an answer to this before but can't find it. I've given it more thought, and am going to separate out acting from the ability to skate in the character of the dance. For example, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir can skate in the character of any dance, including facial expressions, which is all that matters in competition. (I don't think actual acting matters one bit.) But as actors, I don't think they're on par with Anissini Peizeret, who have no equal. A&P could do intense drama, romantic lyrical, and also be hilarious. Today, I think Gilles & Poirier are excellent, or, rather, Piper is. I understood the limitations of the skating and choreography in the Psycho program, but as theatre it was very watchable, effectively put together, and Piper sold the bejesus out of it. Lots of skaters work it as best they can, with every bit as much conviction as Piper, but they're just not naturals at it and the "try" shows. Piper's just good at it.
