It's interesting that the skating official commented on obscenities re: junior ice dance -- I've heard a couple of words that some might consider obscenities springing up in a few programs this year--
-"Shows that we ain't gonna stand s***" in D/R's Hometown Glory (Adele)
-"Kept my d*** wet with that same old bet" - in multiple skaters' Back to Black (Beyonce)

I wonder if the ISU will clarify their stance on explicit language in programs at some point? Honestly, if the song is good enough, I'd rather hear the actual word than a big, distracting bleep noise, but I suppose there's a limit (multiple occurrences in the same song, more flagrant words, etc.).

IMO, music should be "appropriate".

If the song references rape, domestic violence, or other completely inappropriate matter, it should be a ten point deduction.

Obscene language/swear words should be instant disqualification.

Let's not see our sport devolve into some yobbo free for all.

Full Definition of hip–hop
1
: a subculture especially of inner-city youths who are typically devotees of rap music
2
: the stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rap; also : rap together with this music

Rhythm and Blues music, or R&B music, was originally termed "race music" and basically included any form of music intended for black audiences. A combination of jazz, gospel, and blues, the term "R&B" was originally coined in the late 1940’s in the United States to be used as a less offensive marketing term.

Those definitions come from an online Webster's site and are a broad brushstroke of what both genres have evolved to. For me, rap music or hip hop is music that IS rapped to. R&B is soulful and bluesy.

Personally I wouldn't categorize Whitney Houston's IWALY as anything other than a beautiful ballad.

For more context about Whitney's version. Here's the Wikipedia page quote.

Houston and producer David Foster re-arranged the song as an R&B ballad.

And further down, many of the awards she won.

The 7th Soul Train Music Awards Best R&B/Soul Single, Female Won

The 4th Billboard Music Awards #1 Hot R&B Single (R&B Single of the Year) Won

The 4th Billboard Music Awards No. 1 Hot R&B Singles Sales Won

The 21st American Music Awards Favorite Soul/R&B Single Won

The 8th Soul Train Music Awards Best R&B Song of the Year Won

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Will_Always_Love_You

Besides it's modern R&B, so the definition of R&B has change and deepened since it's invention. In fact, Whitney practically invented modern R&B herself. People probably associate R&B with Aretha Franklin, even though the music has evolved since then. Maybe that's where the confusion is coming from.

Didn't Tara, Kristi and Katarina do a ridiculously bad rap number in Stars on Ice? I tried searching for a visit of it on YouTube but came up short.

You didn't miss anything. It was terrible and it wasn't because of the skaters themselves. IMO, it was some of the worst choreography I've had the pleasure to come across. It takes some doing to make skaters with that much talent look like dance free dorks.....Cute outfits though.

Observations:

- I'm not a Chock / Bates fan, but their ex to Beyonce's "Haunted" was pure sex. It is far superior to their snoozy Rach 2.

- MJ is always, always a great choice, but why is nobody skating to Janet Jackson? "When I Think of You" would make a joyous free skate for a skater with a sunny personality.

- There was a clip on Instagram from many many months ago of Viktoria Sinitsina taking a hip-hop class with Cathy Reed. Vika's got some moves!

- That old standby "I Try" by Macy Gray would make a great FD.

- "Misty Blue" by Dorothy Moore was wonderfully used on SYTYCD years ago. It would be magnificent in an ex with the lights down low. I'm thinking W/P for that one.

- "Diamonds" by Rihanna demands a diva to perform it well. I nominate Ashley Wagner to embody this.

- "Hotline Bling" seems made for Max Trankov, he is a major hip-hop fan, and I think Tanya is a Bey devotee. Maybe "Drunk in Love" for them, anyone else want them to twerk together to "surfboard"?

- 70s classics from Earth Wind & Fire or Sly & the Family Stone are always fun and lend themselves well to short programs.

- Jason Brown and Mae Berenice Meite both skated to PRINCE at the Sochi games. Please, please let them continue to perform his work. "7" from his '92 album would have great choreographic movements.

- I will pay good money to see Gracie Gold take a cue from the "Straight Outta Compton" movie and do a number to "F Da Police" by NWA.

Nancy Kerrigan has actually skated to Janet Jackson multiple times! She must be a fan. In 1997, it was "Together Again" (can't find a video of this) and in 1994 at that cheesy Rock and Roll Championship, it was a medley of "Again" and "If."

I seriously think Plushy should go into acting. He is so expressive, he's almost like a "Mime" when he does these show programs. I imagine after all his touring that he doesn't really need the money but, I sure would love to see him in movies. Illia Kulik was in that dance movie Center Stage and Plushy is certainly as talented as Illia.

Funny thing is that Ilia Kulik did not do his dancing in that film (one of my secret delights!).

And I agree with a good explanation on R/B, Hip Hop, etc. It's not derailing anything. How can we discuss in this thread if we aren't on the same page? Because Whitney's "I Will Always Love you" sounds pure Pop to me. Streisand would sound just like that too, and she's not R/B at all. Whitney's done some good R/B songs "I'm Your Baby Tonight", "It's Not Right But It's Okay". Maybe Frida you can help educate us with your knowledge instead of starting something then backing out?

On the topic of RnB programs, I had completely forgotten (thx to Sylvia in FSU and her link to an Amy Rosewater column on Colleen O'Connor and Jim Millns) O'Conner and Millns' bronze FD at the 1976 Olympics:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu4eMrr3E2U

the good: where else would you hear a melange of Africano by EW&F, Get Dancin' by the inimitable Disco Tex and his Sex-O-Lettes, and TSOP (the Sound of Philadelphia) by MFSB *and* Send in the Clowns? Inspired:agree:

the bad: I love the good old days, but not everything was good. Those horrible, horrible, horrible Muzak versions of the above tunes. Robert Wagenhoffer also used horrible Muzak versions of "disco" (that is old school RnB dance) tunes. I want real EW&F skated to, and I want it now.

the ugly: I don't remember Dick Button talking that much?!? But I guess he did, it was ice dance, who cared?:noshake: Be quiet, Uncle Dick!

Has anyone ever skated to "Ready To Go" By Republica? I absolutely loved this song when I heard it for the first time and I can't believe it's almost 20 years old. This was their only big hit in the US. Maybe they could start a "One Hit Wonder" Category...;)

Yes, I did know about that about Illia. In fact, it was common knowledge around LA that he was chosen because he was the OGM. However, it was VERY common in those days to have a "Dance Double." Jennifer Beals had one in "Flash Dance" and Kim Richards had one in a Movie that I worked on called "Tuff Turf"

You know who should have had a Dance Double along with a Voice Double??? Maxwell Caulfield. I was in the studio when he recorded "Charades" from Grease 2 and they did their best to get rid of it but.....Maxwell had a Lisp and was very insecure as a singer. However, he insisted on doing his own vocals so they let him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_3pya8vCOI

Oh god, Maxwell Caulfield (and Nicholas Clay) sent my preteen heart aflutter in the early 80s!!! Even his total beauty could not get me to watch Grease 2 all the way through. lol. Maybe Evan should skate to the soundtrack? hehe

You know else was really dreamy in the 80's and couldn't sing.......Michael Pare. He was in Streets Of Fire. Another terrible movie I worked on. You know, when I look back on the 80's it was the worst decade for so many things and I was there to see it all. :yahoo: This song was actually sung by very white Dan Hartman and then filmed with 3 "Lip Syncing" black guys in the movie.

Here's "I Can Dream About You" from Streets Of Fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gefPJ3unLg

Igor has already arranged hiphop classes for his students! I am hoping for some great SDs there in Novi.

Just remembered Kristi Y. also skated to Janet Jackson once (though the song itself is more of a rock song than R&B): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAYX0Z8P4Do

I feel like the choreography and performance of this were actually one of the better attempts to bring this genre to the ice out there. Kristi was always so versatile!

I've been watching videos from the World Hip Hop Championships on YT and I am astounded at how the dance form has evolved. I was expecting something along the lines of the dancing I'd seen in music videos. That style of dancing is there, but there is so much more. Many of the dances are highly stylized and abstract with dancers who show incredible technical skills and control. The competition is surprisingly international, as well. At the 2015 World Hip Hop Championships the winning team was from South Korea and the runners-up were from New Zealand and Japan.

Here's a Hip Hop piece from 2012 that shows how polished and theatrical this form of dance can be.
