Few musicians, few ballerinas, singers (mostly), few prominent leaders of humanitarian charities organization. 92 in total. All gone. :( All singers of famous Alexandrov's ensemble are gone now..

Alexander Alexandrov was a Russian composer, he toured front lines during WW2 and performed for troops. He is also the author of the current Russian anthem. There is some power, strength and drama flow in his music. this ensemble dating back to 1920s subsequently was named in Alexandrov's name.

This ensemble was touring the world a lot even at the current times. Concerts, humanitarian missions, disaster relief. Their reach was truly worldwide. Those Russian male choirs are usually seriously cool. Check this out if you want to wow! Reportedly they were gonna perform at Hmeymim airbase, in Latakia and Aleppo for New Years. Human rights fighter and humanitarian charity organization leader 'Doctor Liza' and her charity were bringing medicine, blankets, candies to Syria.

Those guys knew it's better to sing than to fight.. *salute*

Congrats to Evgenya. I must say she is growing on me. I hope she dedicates her Worlds FS to all the members of the Russian Military Choir that were lost in the Baltic Sea plane disaster. Evgenya is right....you never know who will come home once they leave the house.......

Don't give Averbukh any more ideas......

Pogo made it. Alina is too young. So Anna is still going to Euros and Worlds.

Regarding plane crash, the black box as recovered and appeared to be not damaged. Last talks between the pilots were about chassis and elevons/flaps. So guys on military forums came to conclusion that it was a human factor - pilot mistake. Apparently in Tupolev-154 those two buttons are next to each other: hide chassis and change angle of elevons (by moving flaps to another angle). The guys were on route from Moscow to Latakia to perform for troops at the airbase and New Year festivities in Aleppo, but they needed to pick up something (some humanitarian cargo, blankets, medicine, candies for kids for NY) in Sochi and do some refueling. It was like 5 am. I guess the co-pilot was sleepy and tired and hit the wrong button. I read some Russian ex-military pilot few hours ago on military forum, they say that Tu-154 is very unforgiving bird, one have to be very precise with it, even little mistake can lead into serious consequences. So far, judging by transmissions from black box, it seems the first pilot gave command to hide chassis, copilot responded: done. And then suddenly 2 seconds later emergency alarm and automation electronics start screaming "maximum angle of attack", 2 seconds later - boom. They were just 2 mins away from the airport, still picking up height.

They were flying military transport semi-cargo plane. Pilots were experienced with a decent amount of flight hours behind their belts. This bird requires maximum concentration and alertness per words by Russian pilots from forum. First more/less credible preliminary version is human factor - copilot was a bit sleepy and hit the wrong button when the plane was still picking up height to take 7k echelon. 4 seconds later after this mistake they were already pass the point of no return - piqued down into the see. Hydraulic hit, no survivors on the spot right away. :(

ETA: tragic mistake of 7-8" apart: https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/41340/33837834.108/0_174b2d_d755b6b8_orig

My condolences to Russia.

Glad Pogo made it! Got to see her live for the first time (and Rika and Satoko) at SkateCanada Kelowna BC 2014 . She popped out from behind a curtain to the restricted area right next to me and I didnt know what to say so I just smiled. LOL!

Wow...as a typical pilot, I found your info very interesting. I looked up pics of the cockpit, and sure enough, the flap and gear levers are two of the overhead controls with some of the radio stacks. Depending on how old the plane was and when it was last upgraded, the cockpit would look a bit different but those two controls would be in the same position. I dont know much about Russian planes but in basically all US planes, one moves the gear lever "Up" to raise the gear and "down" to lower it. Same with the flaps, as you can see in your pic. If the copilot grabbed the flap handle and suddenly moved it up, the wing would have lost a bunch of lift in a hurry, and the gear staying down as drag, the plane could have easily stalled even at the climb power and normal AOA (angle of attack). (Today, a lady landed her 6 passenger twin engined aircraft at the smaller of two Spokane airports, but she forgot to put the gear down. She walked away but the plane will need new props and rebuilt engines and some sheet metal work. )
