A Basic Introduction to the Free Dance...

People who don't watch ID or only watch ID occasionally (like, during the Olympics-- or when it ISN'T SCHEDULED FOR 4 AM [hint hint event organizers]) tend to sniff at ID or dismiss it as "boring" or "easy". When I've asked a number of these people why they feel this way, two answers crop again and again. ID doesn't have big jumps (well no it doesn't; what it does have is the purest form of skating of all the disciplines) and they don't "get" how it is scored. What is it they're supposed to be looking at? This is probably why even the most casual of viewers love twizzles. They're both very difficult to do, and it's easy to differentiate a good set of twizzles (speed, flow, distance covered are all good) from a bad one (Whoops! They fell. Whoops! They missed catching the blade! Whoops! They lost their balance! Not so good.).

So here we are at the Free Dance. This being figure skating "free" is a relative term. Why yes, even here there are REQUIREMENTS GALORE:

Dance Lifts: Either one combo lift or two short lifts (if you include a choreographic lift, you can now have up to four lifts in a FD program)
Dance Spins: Either one dance spin or combination dance spin
Twizzles: One combination set
Step Sequences: Two, with one in hold and one not touching performed on one foot. Can be either straight line or curved.
Choreographic Elements: Two different elements from the following choices: Choreographic Lift, Choreographic Spinning Movement, Choreographic Twizzling Movement. Choreographic Sliding Movement, Choreographic Character Step Sequence (it's the choreographic equivalent of a Chinese menu!).

Periodically, the ISU goes into a tizzy about Ice Dancing, worried that it is becoming too "athletic" and "not dancey enough." So they do things like limit the number and timing of lifts. Or, as they have recently done, they've made the choreographic elements more stringent. Two of these are relatively new. The first is the "Choreographic Character Step Sequence." I was under the apparently mistaken impression that the entire dance is a choreographic character sequence, with steps yes and spins and lifts. Bill Neal in another thread provided a helpful explanation: "[P]artners perform around the short axis in hold and/or non-touching: steps (some are done in-place), all sorts of different movements including sliding and turns, and mirroring choreography (each partner may cross the axis also)." The sliding movement is also a new choreographic feature this quad. They must be continuous, they may rotate, they can be in hold or not touching. Sliding Movement cannot finish as a stop on 2 knees or sitting/lying on the ice, otherwise it will be identified as a Fall/Illegal Element. I suspect they added this last requirement to prevent a rush of Torvill/Dean-esque dramatic death endings (ah! memories!).

A complete list of the FD requirements can be found here:
https://www.isu.org/docman-documents...tion-2148/file

My particular favorite is the costume requirements. Men are now allowed to wear tights; the "lady" (oh COME ON ISU, it's 2018; they're women) MUST wear a skirt. Sexist much? But here's the real laff riot: "Must be modest, dignified, not give the effect of excessive nudity and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing however may reflect the character of the chosen music." Oh reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally? I guess "garish and theatrical" are like definitions of pornography--exceedingly flexible when you want to issue a penalty. Just saying...

Ice Dance is a definite exception to the rule that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." On the contrary, a little knowledge makes ID so much more enjoyable to watch.

The time would've been perfect for me if I didn't have my tutoring sessions... Still, money is money and I think I'll be able to watch live at least until the second group (please judges, quick scoring...).

Country: Chinese Taipei aka Taiwan
Music: Comptine d'une autre ete; L'apres-midi; J'y suis jamais alle; La valse d'Amelie (all from "Amelie" soundtrack) by Yann Tiersen
Choreography by: Igor Shpilband
Costumes:Red dress for her, black pants with white v-neck shirt for him

Program Layout:

NT St Seq - level 1 for both. About as basic as you can get
Dance Spin
Twizzles - Lost sync in the last set Whoops. Level 3 for her, 4 for him
St Line Lift a bit wobbly. Typical Igor lift--she steps up onto his thigh. A bit wobbly
Circular St Seq
Chor Spin - nice
Chor Rotational Lift - with a cool one armed entry. Level 4

Very slow and cautious but not without its charm. Much more animated than last outing. Need to work on those basics kids. Edges, turns, all the basics.

Score: 62.68

I'm sure I saw a team do a OD-like FD before... I don't think it was these two though.

Viktoriia AZROIAN / Aleksandr SIROSHTAN
Country: Armenia
Music: American Rhapsody; American Melody
Choreography by: Mikhail Kolegov
Costumes: VERY elaborate maroon embroidered tunic over a hot pink dress for her, black embroidered pants and top for him. All very High empire style.

Program Layout:

Curve Lift - nicely done Level 4 Really interesting positions and entry
Twizzles - done, with connecting steps, in a circular pattern. Nice. She at level 3 he at level 2
Rotational Lift with jump entry
Serp Step Seq not great edges but good flow
NT Step Seq (SL) - level 2 for her, level 1 for him.
Dance Spin
Tempo change and man the energy level went wayyyyyy up. Nice steps in front of the judges
Choreo Spin
Choreo Lift with a very cool position

They need to up their step sequences, but there's some good stuff in there. Her bell sleeves may be an unnecessary impediment. It's important to look good, but not when it hampers your movement!

Dedication :agree: I too have destroyed my sleep cycle for figure skating, I have no idea whether watching this sport has bettered or worsened my mental health.

Who was it that said "I will stumble and fall" are terrible lyrics for skating? I need that person to tell me the lottery numbers.

Costumes: Nice two toned purple dress with purple and rhinestones for her, basic black for him

Program Layout:

Steps ending with a nice long curve into
Twizzles - a bit out of sync and distance problems; Level 3 for her, 4 for him
Diag Step Seq - Doris called this the "Tempo Death March." She wasn't kidding.
Dance Spin - Level 4 but man the dirgy music is a Tempo Death March. I'm not kidding either.
Choreo Spin
SL Lift - lovely backbend from her
NT Step Seq (SL) - she took one really hard fall. Ouch. Lost her balance.
Curve Lift - he does some weird spasm thing with his hand. It looks more like a symptom than choreography. Level 3
Choreo Lift with a weird drop

Final "Oh me oh my our relationship's kaput" pose

He did give her a very supportive hug when they finished. That was one nasty fall.

Is there a way to speed up the Zamboni? I want to watch S/N live before I go teach my 13-year-old English.

Ooh, another team's skating to Black Cat, White Cat! At least they're not in the same group with U/N.

Costumes:Black and white polka dots and color blocking galore for both; one black glove for him

Program Layout:

SL Lift nice pickup over the shoulder dropping down to lunge position. Level 3 Nice
NT St Seq level 3 for him; level 1 for her. Nice but SLOWWWW. Does flow seamlessly into
Ser Step Seq with twizzles exit
Cartwheel into twizzles - Hand on head for first set. Lost sync last set. Level 3 for him; level 2 for her
Slide into dance spin - really nice. Level 4. A bit slow.
Chor Character St Sequnce - one of the best I've seen this season. This is what a CCSS should do-- reveal character.
Ch Spinning Movemnt
Ro Lift - level 3 One armed lift by thigh with a difficult entry

They were going for sass and much better than last time. They really upped their speed. Very quirky music. I can see why it will be popular.

I enjoyed that.

Score: 75.59 A SB for them.

Drat!!! I didn't notice that things started so early today!!!   :bang: :bang: :bang:

Erm, I'm watching the Ladies Free at the moment, and have only just reached Ichatdelune's fellow countrywoman, Kim Min-Seung. So, given that I am heading out in about an hour and a half, I may as well stick with them. Especially since I will be watching motorbikes for the rest of the day after I come home.

EDIT: Now that I've seen her routine, I'm sorry for reminding you about it. Poor girl! But, she'll be back and better next time! :agree:

But, I'll do my normal reminders below anyway so that I can get to the links quickly tomorrow without seeing any spoilers.

Here is the livestream:

Here is the Time Schedule:

And here is the live scoring:

Hope this helps. And sorry that it is so late
