BTW, Hint, Hint,

Someone should adopt Avonley and Vadim, and make them a nice Fan Fest.

Yes, but I'm thinking of an older team. I think. May be wrong.

Anissina/Peizerat did something similar

But I am not forgetting the Browns

Me neither. Seems like skaters who want to bring new things to the sport. And a new coach/choreographer(at lest to me). Hope they all stay together, learning from experience, having success in the future

If he tried out with Alison Reed, he could be from any country in the world ;)

In the JGP thread on FSU, a couple posters say the Browns' coach is 1. from Ukraine, 2. trained in the U.S., 3. skated for Mexico.

Think this must be him:

Oh, I definitely don't claim any expert knowledge about dance coaches for the younger teams. It's really hard to look up info on novices, etc. At Nationals, since all the families are usually crammed into the same space to watch the young dancers, you can stumble on fun factoids about teams just sitting in the stands; but that's not exactly a thorough basis for knowledge.

Nicer judges/tech panel or are these teams actually going to score higher than the others?

I think it's always futile to try to compare scores from across events. Boy, we started out with some nightmare skates here. And the top-ranked returning junior team from last season was here so the sky was the limit & there were plenty of struggling teams to compare them to. I do think scores ran higher here. And I do think the tech panel in Austria called a tight event.

As for the "nicer tech panel," though, this tech panel is composed of the technical specialist from the Olympic Games, Slavka Grincova, and the assistant tech specialist, Galit Chait, who has a reputation for being tough. Probably not most people's definition of a "nice" tech panel.

That was a great free dance, full of so much variety. Was surprised by the very high scores. The most amazing performance for me was the Browns. They looked so tiny and young starting off, I didn’t he think he could lift her but skated way beyond their years. They have a very bright future.

I preferred U/N free from last year over This year, I found it a bit frantic in places but they are great to watch. Very fiery and passionate performers. Loved the Americans, their performance flew by, she looks like Madison Chock. Great to see Ukraine on the podium, with Azerbaijan in fourth. That must be the best result by an Azeri skater.

Family can drive you crazy sometimes.

Sorry guys but I moved the computer so I would be a nice son and not wake my mom up and my sister wound up taking the wrong power cord (actually she had the one for her computer and for her laptop). She called me up hours after I spent looking for the damn plug to tell me, Oops, sorry I took both of them by accident. So I not only missed doing the PBP, I missed the entire competition.

Family. You gotta love them.

.

All 3 things are true plus a fourth one - he is the one who was a partner and coach for Anabelle Morosov (Nikolai Morosov's daugther) for a couple of years, before she found a real partner. And finally - in my whole life I have not seen better skating skills and edges than Andrew's.

So this is
Alice ROGATNIK / Yehor BARSHAK ISR

FD: "Story of Chess" (from "Chess" musical soundtrack) by Bjoern Andersson; "Prolog" by Bjoern Andersson; "Where I Want to Be" by Bjoern Andersson, performed by Josh Groban; choreo by Maria Tumanovska-Chaika, Anaid Konair

Since it is Chess, they are using black and white for their costumes.

I have never admired this music for skating very much.

And the fact that more steps are allowed between twizzles now is confusing. You think it is going to be a step sequence, but then there are more twizzles.

And of course, at least one twizzly move is included in step sequences these days.

55.22 FD 3rd
95.35 Total. Third of three.

I had to laugh (and laugh and laugh) when I read this because the first two competitions with doing the PBP for the FD, I was like, wait is that the twizzles? Or a choreo twizzle? Or a step seq WITH twizzles? Why is my brain twizzling?

:gaah:

Yes this confuses me too. Yes, there might be a benefit as far as ice coverage doing it with steps, but I just prefer good old fashioned twizzles non-stop.

Stepanova and Bukin should send the ISU a big fruit basket or something as a gigantic :thank: for this rule change because it's going to hide the fact that, as wonderful as their twizzles might appear, they're also practically pirouettes.

I personally wouldn't perform to music with lines like "I will stumble and fall".

LOL. There's a Yiddish saying I love which translates essentially as "Don't invite the devil to dinner."

And a line like "I will stumble and fall" does rather seem to have a RSVP attached to it, doesn't it? LOL!

Ah well I'm a big fan of Karine Arribert-Narce (I love choreography that is both quirky and unpredictable) and I think this French couple have loads of potential.

Ah ha. I wondered whether there was a typo in their bio.

So Lavrik, not Lawrik.

I started a Fan Fest for them.

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?75444-Oona-Brown-amp-Gage-Brown&p=2176167

They are certainly his first team of any consequence, and they were novices last year.

And @Ice Dance does not know him, except via the Browns, so even more likely this is his first team. And they list no previous coach in their bio, so he is The Man.

If he tried out with Alison Reed, he could be from any country in the world ;)

LOL re: Alison Reed. Both she and the glorious and much missed MsIz probably have passports the size of family Bibles.

Quickies on First Two Groups:

Belorussians: Man, bumpy. I get that they want a midtempo piece at this point (because they're easier to dance to) but this is a bit of a head-scratcher of a music choice. and the transitions between moves are cumbersome to the nth degree. Like the costumes though.

Armenians: They are wearing Costumes with a capital C, and they are beautiful. FAB music-- a smart senior team will steal -- I mean also choose-- this music for a future FD. Gorgeous opening curve lift and final choreo lift. Yes yes it was glitchy but they have PRESENCE.

Israelis: While not quite on the level of "so bizarre they made it a musical" like The Shroud of Turin, Chess is pretty close (yes, let's make a musical out of one of the most static things you can imagine, like a chess match!). She has presence; he needs to work on that. Better than their first outing but still a forgettable program.

Estonians: The Estonians are also bringing the Costumes with a Capital C today. They're cute, they're young, they're too young for this. Not their fault. You can see potential, but they should have waited a few years to tackle this.

Lithuanians: The Korzeniowski music is LOVELY; same with final stationary lift. They have a really lovely floaty quality but the increased tempo tends to show up their inexperience. Polish, polish, polish!

Brits: Doris, you're right. I got the same "workmanlike" vibe from this. And pouring on the bombast isn't making it anything but Eminently Forgettable.

French: If there is one word to describe this, it would have to be UNDER-REHEARSED. (The other word which comes to mind is OVERAMBITIOUS). Kudos for the Arabic pop music--I'm a fan of Arabic music and it's lovely to hear some that DOESN'T scream Use Cleopatra Hands As Much As Possible. The ending pose is a major mistake. Too awkward and unnatural. It's hard for me to comment on this because it's so under-rehearsed. A rough skate. But I still think they've got potential.

Germans: I love Whiny Emo Pop Songs as much as the next fella, but if you're going to use them in ID, you gotta, you know, actually bring the emo. The second half was much better, more emotionally connected. The ending is a bit too Hit Me Over The Head With The Obvious. But that's better than the Teutonic Stoicness of the first part.

Group Three and Group Four:

Natalie TASCHLEROVA / Filip TASCHLER [Czechs]: Nice position on the choreographic spin with her hand on his knee. Same with first posiition in the dance spin. And in the final spin with her in a sitting posiiton. I do like the attack. But man, you can SEE the effort.

Francesca RIGHI / Aleksei DUBROVIN [Italians]: Snoozefest.

Ekaterina ANDREEVA / Ivan DESYATOV [Russians]: LOADS better than the RD. Lovely Russian sweeping edges. A bit too frantic entry into and dance spin (Holy Hysteria Hands Batman!). You can see all the rough edges, inexperience, franticness, lack of speed and power and emotional subtlety. But this program shows their potential much more than the RD.

Ashlynne STAIRS / Elliott GRAHAM [Canadians]: Not a fan of the music (sorry Cher) and the choreography is serviceable, but they have a lovely ingenue quality right now, very boy/girl next door vibe. Why not try something like Meet Me in St Louis? Just a thought.

Irina GALIYANOVA / Grayson LOCHHEAD [Canadians]: Ugh on the satin costumes. Too PJ for words. And the song is too much Teen Angst for my taste. Maybe it's because they seem more mature than the music? Make that much more mature...

Yana BUGA / Georgy POKHILYUK [Azerbaijanis]: They really impressed me in the RD. Less impressive is her Disillusion fabric (ugh girlfriend). This isn't quite as good--it's a bit frantic. But kudos that they didn't let such Big Music overwhelm them. Keep an eye on them.

Oona BROWN / Gage BROWN [USA]: It is downright scary how much performance ability, musicality and emotional maturity these two show already. If I was an American dance team, I'd be scared. Just wow. Shame about the fall, and the score (what musical requirement did they violate???) but honestly they are wowser.

Darya POPOVA / Volodymyr BYELIKOV [Ukrainians]: This is another couple where I have a feeling I'm never going to get the JudgeLove they seem to inspire. That dance spin was DREADFUL. The rest was well ok. That's all.

Arina USHAKOVA / Maxim NEKRASOV [Russians]: You can't fault their technical ability which is mindblowing. But everything is so FRANTIC FRANTIC FRANTIC. Honestly, I wish they would try to impress less and DANCE more. They have the talent to do so.

Avonley NGUYEN / Vadym KOLESNIK [USA]: Just another wow. They're so well matched. It doesn't hit you over the head with how good it is technically like U/N, but emotionally it is much richer than the Russians. I would have given them the FD (on PCS).

Best FD of the season overall so far. ID is in good shape for the future. Really good shape.

what musical requirement did they violate???

You have to have a clear change of tempo between the two footwork sequences in the FD. (This is, I believe, in part to discourage all the teams from doing both of them to slow music, which is easier to perform clean & earn the levels on). Think the Browns' was found to not have a clear enough change, if any. (I haven't gone back to rewatch).
