Puzzled as to why there are 3 pairs from Pacifics and 5 pairs each from Easterns and Midwesterns?

There were only 3 pairs from Pacifics that competed there, so all got a berth to Nationals. There are 12 slots at Nationals for pairs that do not have a Bye to Nationals (and AFAIK, there are never any Novices with Byes), so if the usual four teams each were taken from Easterns and Midwesterns, Nationals would have had only had 11 teams. The fill rule then is that the fifth place team, (if there are any fifth place teams from sectionals) is taken from both of the other two sections for a net, in this case, of 13 teams.

Some thoughts from watching novice pairs today... the Fendis are in a good position after the short (3), which surprised me since it was a bit of a rough program. I hope it won't be the case, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop in the standings a bit considering how close they are in points to the next few teams down (the next five down are <1.3 points away). Hom/Jerosch and Makhova/Makhov (1 and 2 respectively) stole the event IMO. Hom/Jerosch are a strong team with a program that's perfectly suited for them, very enjoyable to watch, and Makhova/Makhov are just so stinkin' cute--well, she is, and he's the perfect older brother. They're seven years apart but they're pretty well matched, not like some of the other pairs with a large age gap where you can tell the guy is trying to slow himself down for his younger partner. I swear they look familiar but apparently this is their first season together. Hope they keep going, because the cute factor is +10, and they're strong technically also. Goldstein/Bearinger and Asher/Dennler are two other teams that looked pretty strong but had element errors that kept them down.
