Novice ladies short program

Going to try some quick hits:

1) Amy Miyagi - looked like all three jumps were under roated, skated to "Once Upon a December."

2) Ariela Masarsky - "Paint It Black." Intense program, Triple flip /double toe close to boards, looked clean. solo triple toe, clean, solid double axel perhaps a touch under rotated, did well with the music.

3) Emelia Zingas - high energy Latin-esque program, looks like Polina Edmunds. Combo triple was under rotated by a full half rotation, perhaps more, but tacked on the double toe, solo triple was arms over the head ... triple lutz (still playing catchup) that may have been two-footed and a touch underrotated. Clean double axel. Very pretty skater.

4) Beverly Zhu - "River Flows in You."

Very lanky, delicate skater, good match to the music. Triple flip/double toe, very clean, same with the solo triple (salchow?). Very pretty layback, and the double axel covered a lot of ice. Beautiful use of the music and expression. Can't say enough about how artistically pleasing this routine was.

5) Calista Choi - "Fantasia."

Fall on the triple salchow, UR, combination was clean. Well done variations on the layback spin, pulling up into the Beillman. Music is very "Zorba the Greek" - esque, and the program reflects it. Pretty double axel. Nice speed on the combination spin, and reasonably well centered.

6) Maddie Weiler - "Tears of an Angel." In a very pretty white/cream/pink dress illustrating the angel theme, including white in her hair.

Clean triple toe, double toe combo. Fell on the triple loop, UR. Maintaining a pretty smile throughout. Clean double axel that was a touch late on the opening leg. Very artistic program, but she's not taking the time to fully extend all the elegant movements. Solid layback to finish, and did finish on the music.

7) Sarah Jung - "Shatter Me" by Lindsey Sterling. Another lanky skater, in a long light pink dress with purple accent in stripes.

Slow on her combo, at least the double toe underrotated (followed triple lutz?). Got her triple flip landed, again perhaps underrotated. Double axel looked fairly clean, but it looked like she may have then bailed out of her layback spin? Overall seemed to lack speed and expression.

8) Violeta Ushakova - “Mon coeur s’ouvre a ta voix” from Samson et Delila by Camille Saint-Saens. Very Spanish style dress with black lace and red skirt and bodice with purple under the red skirt and black lace gloves.

Went up crooked and fell on triple loop, but came back with triple toe/double toe that looked fully rotated. Solid double axel. Nicely packaged routine and skater with a strong combination speed to finish, but ended well off her music.

9) Jessica Lin - “Megapolis” by Bel Suono

Landed triple toe, then fell (planned 3T+3T combo). Low double axel, but clean. Responded with a triple flip/double toe combo that looked reasonably clean. Solid spins and worked well with the music.

10) Christina Lin - “Pa’ Bailar by Bajofondo Tango Club ft. Ryota Komatsu

TEENY tiny skater. Pretty layback to start. Expressive face. Landed T lutz but had to spin out before tacking on the double toe. spun out of the solo triple loop, too. Solid double axel. Really nice extension and toe point.

11) Sophia Chouinard - Bolero by Maurice Ravel

Another tall, lanky skater, or maybe just looks taller after Christina Lin.

Very nice package with black dress, black hair bun and gold accents on the dress. Hand down on the triple toe, then landed triple loop but popped double toe into a single. Nice flexibility on her spins...and then into a needle back spiral into the double axel. Expressive with the music, has really started to attack the program now that the jumps are done. Missed her grip on the pull up to Beillman on the closing layback spin, but still finished the spin fairly clean.

12) Noelle Rosa - "Spanish Flame” by Maxime Rodriguez

Unusual white and black dress with red accents. Clean triple flip/double toe, triple lutz with stumble out/hand down that looked UR, but followed with a nice double axel. Traveling on her combination spin. Solid speed and expression. Good layback to finish with a flare to the Spanish music.

Thoughts on novice ladies short... Beverly Zhu definitely stole the show for this event with a lovely clean skate, ending 6.5ish points ahead of the next competitor. Very messy competition overall, lots and lots of falls, step-outs, hands down, etc. Hopefully a cleaner free skate from everyone~

Thoughts on novice ladies short... Beverly Zhu definitely stole the show for this event with a lovely clean skate, ending 6.5ish points ahead of the next competitor. Very messy competition overall, lots and lots of falls, step-outs, hands down, etc. Hopefully a cleaner free skate from everyone~

I did quick hits in another thread if anyone is interested. Mostly agree that it was sloppy, but there were some really artistic skates in the bunch, too. Can't wait to see the protocols, though, because a lot of the scores weren't what I expected.
