Maybe ISU should issue some rule for limited jumps in short and long programs? Like only 1 quad in SP and 2 quads in LP for men?

Even if they limit it knowing Hanyu and Fernandez they'd just practice the hardest quads to use in their programs :slink:

Yeah. Those boys. :scowl: if there were a limit, I am afraid they might change from 4T and 4S to 4Loop and 4lutz.

But then Kevin Reynolds won't be able to do a 2-quad SP and a 3-quad FP! Which he has done more than once.

That will hurt the chances on skaters that can do difficult and demanding layouts, it wouldn´t be fair

I agree. For skaters like Max and Kevin R., what sets them apart, is their ability to gain technical points with their superior jumping. Though, they have both improved their performance skills, IMO, they rely on their jumps to get them on the podium.

Back pain is an issue in every sport. Tennis star Tracy Austin had her career end at 19 due to back issues. Racheal Flatt had back problems yet, she had one of the best Ina Bauer's ( Is that how to say it ? ) and gorgeous Spread Eagles. Neither of those positions are easy on the lower back. As a dancer, I have injured my lower back ending turns due to the momentum built during the turn.

I can imagine a poorly checked quad can be quite painful even if a skater doesn't fall. I don't skate anymore, and never did more than a double when I did so, someone with more knowledge can give a better answer.

It's a strategy thing. Injuries are part of the process and sometimes you have to mitigate them to compete.

I don't see there's much to gain to limit quads/technical content. I think it's up to the skater and that skater's team to determine the best strategy. You have folks like Jason Brown/Kori Ade, who have opted to focus on different areas to prevent injury (and in the case of the 3A, wait out some major growth spurts). But then you have others that believe it's best to max out technical content while they're still working on the second mark.

There's a risk of injury doing those harder elements, but again the team has to decide if the end result is worth the extra strain.

Wow, Do you really know Hanyu and Fernandez??? Tell us about them, some of us are not so lucky. Do you live in Canada near Brian Orser's training area? A lot of us are jealous.

Not exactly the happiest thread to have a list of casualties, but handy as a resource. Thanks to LRK for starting this.

We can also use this thread to send our favorite injured skaters some get well wishes?

Absolutely!

I think it's a bit simplistic to just say, "Back pain? Stop the Biellmann!" It could easily be from something else.

Anyway, thank you, LRK, for this thread. Like many, I wish it wasn't needed, but it's good to have the crucial information all in one place.

Oh boy. All these Pairs injuries. I'm starting to think we should give a medal to those who are able to show up to the GP....

Is it normal to have this many injuries off season? Could it be because of the long Olympic season and the preassure to be ready for the new season?

Hope speed and complete recovery for everyone.

http://www.neveitalia.it/sport/figureskating/notizie/news/adelina-sotnikova-posticipa-il-debutto-stagionale

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere, but according to this article Sotnikova won't be attending the Russian Cup event in October. Google translates it as:

Adelina Sotnikova , unlike what was previously planned, will not take part in the second stage of the Cup of Russia held in Yoshkar-Ola between 6 and 10 October.

The Olympic champion would, in fact, dealing with an risentimeno muscle in the leg that forced her to postpone the racing debut of the season.

According to the coaching staff, it would not be anything serious, but the recent injury has gone to the trouble to add an ankle that go on for several weeks, thereby slowing down a crucial stage of the preparation.

At this point, it is possible that the eighteen year old Moscow to take part in the third stage of the Russian Cup to be held in Sochi in late October. The debut in the Grand Prix, however, is set for mid-November (14-16) at the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow.

It should be noted curiously as the Olympic champions in business are struggling with physical problems of varying scope. The injury of Sotnikova you go, in fact, to add to those of Yuzuru Hanyu (http://www.neveitalia.it/sport/figureskating/notizie/news/yuzuru-hanyu-rinvia-il-debutto-stagionale) and Maxim Trankov (http://www.neveitalia.it/sport/figureskating/notizie/news/ultimi-aggiornamenti-sullimminente-grand-prix-senior) .

Elena Buianova, chief engineer of the defending champion and Olympic athletes in different strengths to CSKA Moscow, did you know that even Maxim Kovtun not participate in the race of Yoshkar-Ola due to the recent forced change of the shoe to a shoe.

EDIT: Sorry, this news is actually 2 days old.: I'll just leave it here for those (like myself) who might not have known. :)

I read that Sotnikova had an ankle injury but it required no medical tests so probably not going to affect her GP status.

Yulia withdrew from Japan Open due to new boots causing discomfort and she wrote on her VK page that she has been home sick for a week without training.

I think a lot of this is a combination of precaution and honestly just taking it easy after last years heavy work loads for all skaters and not just these two. I don't think it's even unusual. If people start missing GP's then we can create a freak out/rant thread to post our frustrations :)

In the Liza fan thread, galiavich posted, what I thought was a really interesting interview with Alexei Mishin:

ETA - All right, I had intended to post an excerpt and link to galiavich's post, but - for whatever reason - the link refuses to go live, so here is in its entirety the translated part of the interview galiavich posted:

"The victory is certainly important, and I want to believe that it will serve as a springboard for further results. But this success is not a guarantee that the results are sure to follow. Much will depend on the mood of most athletes, from working professionals who surround Lisa, on the conditions of preparation.

To achieve high results in our time, it is necessary to work with the athlete not only coach and choreographer, and a team of specialists, which would come in and the doctor and the therapist, which in our group there. Looking for a good training conditions. Athlete of the caliber of Elizabeth Tuktamysheva should have enough ice, and not to train in the "mess" in the flea market together with beginning skaters.

I think that you should create favorable conditions for the preparation of those few top-level athletes who remain in St. Petersburg.

Returning to the beginning of our conversation, I would say that Sasha and Lisa - well done. But I would like to look at these two events in a slightly different plane. Liza and Sasha are young enough. Now they are in a stage of transition from young skaters on the adult level. No need to explain how difficult it is for a period of guys and how bad and responsible for coaches who work with them. Naturally, the girls and boys change that often adversely affect their skating. And then there are two ways. The first - to keep a tight rein on the athlete and make losing weight, as long as possible to maintain youthful appearance. Can be pharmacologically inhibit physical development of athletes. Turn a blind eye to a few minutes after the athlete got up from the table, podevalis eaten.

But there is a second option - when there is a period of growing up, to step aside to give the body to pass their way, form and start all over again. By the time it will take longer, riskier. You can expect a barrage of criticism, saying that where looking coach, skater stout, weight does not keep and do not look after themselves. All this is difficult to survive mentally, coupled with a decrease or lack of results, which naturally follow. After all, with weight changes, growth will break down and technique elements.

In fact, this is a very difficult problem.

Therefore, it seems to me that, given the recent incident with the skater Yulia Antipova, we must seriously puzzled and carefully consider the so-called "transition to adulthood." Draw for a comprehensive discussion of all relevant professionals, including physicians teams and individual groups to express their opinion. It can not be left just like that: talk and forget.

Even a single case - a testament to how this topic is important. Especially now when the Russian figure skating is a change of coaches, comes more and more young professionals who will sooner or later face the challenges of growing athletes. In our figure skating, now there are many talented girls, and we have now to deal with the question of how they grow up. It is from this decision in the first place, will depend on the fate of Olympic medals at the Olympics in Korea.

Coaches need to understand what to do and not to do in this situation, and what absolutely can not do. Coaches should be aware that by the Federation of Medical Service FMBA strictly controlled. And the parents of athletes have to listen and to follow the recommendations for physicians to avoid any "amateur", and then do not look for those responsible for the incident.

Over the years, through my coaching hands passed many students. This Lesch Urmanov, Lesha Yagudin, Oleg Tataurov Zhenya Plushenko, Artur Gachinski, Artur Dmitriev, Lisa Tuktamysheva ... Even before Jeanne Ilyin, Natasha Strelkova Tanya Oleneva, Anna Antonova, Marina Serova ... I can honestly say that I never rush things . Never acted on the principle: win now, and there is the deluge. I have never had a panic because there were a lot of athletes, and when one of them was a member of the awkward age, the other comes out of it.

I am always very calm attitude to criticism of some things. And as I talked about Lisa! "Come on it. This waste material. See how it looks. It will not work. " But the wisdom of the coach lies precisely in the fact that an experienced instructor should know the important things in advance. He must know the athlete, and always maintain the trust. After all, the word that coach - it's like a second father are not empty words. The coach must never betray, even if the students in relation to it is not always behaved with dignity."

More re Leng/Shnapir:

fwiw, USFS describes their injuries as "minor," per today's press release previewing Nepela (including both entries and withdrawals).
Both L/S and Shaughnessy/Morgan "are expected to resume full training soon."

Did we know that Moore-Towers has been dealing with an injury??

M-T/Marinaro originally were on the roster for the Autumn Classic, but they are not competing there.

From her Instagram this morning, now I see why:
