Welcome to our first JGP FD of the season.

This being figure skating "free" is a relative term. Why yes, even here there are REQUIREMENTS GALORE:

Dance Lifts: Either one combo lift or two short lifts
Dance Spins: Either one dance spin or combination dance spin
Twizzles: One combination set
Step Sequences: Two, with one in hold and one not touching on one foot. Can be either straight line or curved.
Choreographic Elements: Two different elements from the following choices: Choreographic Lift, Choreographic Spinning Movement, Choreographic Twizzling Movement. Choreographic Sliding Movement, Choreographic Character Step Sequence

I for one have no idea what a "choreographic character step sequence" is, so if anyone wants to clue me in, I would appreciate it.

The sliding movement is a new feature this quad. They must be continuous, they may rotate, they can be in hold or not touching. Sliding Movement cannot finish as a stop on 2 knees or sitting/lying on the ice, otherwise it will be identified as a Fall/Illegal Element. I suspect they added this last requirement to prevent a rush of Torvill/Dean-esque dramatic death endings (ah! memories!).

A complete list of the FD requirements can be found here:
https://www.isu.org/docman-document...munications/16863-isu-communication-2148/file

My particular favorite is the costume requirements. Men are now allowed to wear tights; the "lady" (oh COME ON ISU, it's 2018; they're women) MUST wear a skirt. Sexist much? But here's the real laff riot: "Must be modest, dignified, not give the effect of excessive nudity and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing however may reflect the character of the chosen music." Oh reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally? I guess "garish and theatrical" are like definitions of pornography--exceedingly flexible when you want to issue a penalty. Just saying...

I for one have no idea what a "choreographic character step sequence" is, so if anyone wants to clue me in, I would appreciate it.

It's a new requirement in seniors to have one in the program (optional for juniors). The document gives some loose guidelines on what it is but it's probably best to illustrate with examples from Asian Open:

Wang/Liu (Exit at 4:09) +1.66 GOE: https://youtu.be/TJ94blfckpM?t=228
Parsons (Exit at 3:54) +2.08 GOE: https://youtu.be/8LGVkppDLik?t=225
Komatsubara/Koleto (Exit at 2:54) +2.28 GOE: https://youtu.be/7P9yQ1oFr1k?t=154

So quite a bit of flexibility on how to complete the element. From these examples, partners perform around the short axis in hold and/or non-touching: steps (some are done in-place), all sorts of different movements including sliding and turns, and mirroring choreography (each partner may cross the axis also).

Thank you Bill, you're always so educational.

Alas, it's going to be a nightmare identifying them because it just looks like, if you will pardon the expression, regular choreography. Does it always start with the couples at full stop?

Well I'll do me best and if I screw up a choreographic element I'll just go back and fix it after the event when I see the protocols. Fair 'nuff? Just feel free to chime in if I miss something.

[Hey it's a new system...we're still working the bugs out...]

Marie Dupayage / Thomas Nabais
Country: France
Music: "Spiegel im Spiegel" by Arvo Paert; "La Vale de Amelie" by Yann Tiersen (Remix)
Choreography by: Karine Arribert-Narce
Costumes:she in black skirt, green with white stripe beaded top; he in black pants, looks like teal with black white stripes (might be a little TOO much costuming going on)

Program Layout:

Step Sequence in hold --they've got nice knees
Stationary Lift
Chor Sliding Movement
Twizzles - he missed his blade on the first set. Whoops.
Straight line lift - nice position
NT Step Seq - again, nice knees (so very french!)
Dance Spin
Choreographic Spin

Not sure I'm on board with the souped up Amelie music. Not sure the two music match. But they do have those great French knees.

Nice job for early in the season.

Choreography by: Svetlana Kulikova, Matthew Gates

NT St Seq
Straight Line Lift - watch that exit
Rotational Lift - again, could be cleaner

These guys have speed galore. Nicely done. Need to work on exiting the lifts cleanly. But the energy was terrific. Keep an eye on them.

Oh dang I didn't read the start time properly and missed the start of this :(

Although maybe I shouldn't despair too much because I totally forgot how much bandwidth streaming skating takes up...

Ooo Team Canada look very elegant!

Did they just do a quick costume change or is my memory worse than ever?

Ha ha that was cute...they really told a story there! (Ted confirms they did do a costume change, that's cool)

Bit of a problem with the ending pose, but still cool.

of course! cinderella got her famous blue dress to go the ball!

I think it was actually the opposite and the blue part is meant to symbolise here going back to normal after midnight.

Uhoh, I see something on ice during the replays! Will there be a deduction for that?

Costumes: Blue dress with dark blue side panels (with costume change!), black pants with white shirt and blue overlay trimmed tunic for him. VERY in character

Rotational Lift - lovely floaty quality
Step Seq in Hold (circular) -- work on those edges , they could be deeper
Ch Character Step Seq.
Twizzles - lovely exit on first set.
NT Step Seq.
Curve lift - awkward entry
Chor Lift

They have a lovely floaty quality in this. MUCH better than the RD. Took a while to get that ending pose eh? LOL, it was actually cute how he put the boot in the right place.
