I know little about the ins and outs of gymnastics but what is it that encourages their athletes to last longer and is it something that skating can emulate? I find it hard to believe that it was just an age limit raise?

Also, the older gymnasts, are they still winning medals and dominating the sport? (I know Simone Biles is but others) because Alina and Evgenia are still winning medals at major competitions and are considered top skaters yet for some reason people consider them has beens and should retire.

Perhaps the actual problem is that the sport needs to increase in popularity to incentive staying even if you're not world number 1?

Well, yes. Counting out Biles, most gymnasts who won medals at the 2016 Olympics were well over 20 (Paseka, Steingruber, Mustafina, Wevers, Raisman). It's becoming ever more unusual for gymnasts to be dominant in their first senior seasons.
Ladies figure skating has always been about youth and that goes back 25 years. The younger the skater, the better are her chances. It seems that the sport hasn't moved away from that trend and I don't see it changing any time soon.

I think figure skating is more comparable with rhythmic gymnastics, which essentially is legs only event. And RSG is a very prestigious sport in Russia, on a par with FS, USSR and Russia has dominated the RSG scene ever since the discipline's inception and inclusion in the Olympics.

In artistic, the trend for older gymnasts (i.e. those with a fully grown body) is to move away from the all around and develop themselves into apparatus specialists. All the apparatus involve tumbling, handstands or in general heavy loads (bodyweight times G-forces) on their wrists, elbows and shoulders. Weaker joints not designed for heavy pounding. Growth plate fractures and defects in wrists are very common in young female adolescent gymnasts.

So excited and nervous for the ladies later on!

Can I just award all 4 Russians the gold, please?

I want each of them to win, for different reasons.
This is HARD!!!

I'm so nervous I had to pour up a glass of wine already:laugh:

Count your quads and triksels ....

Tutberidze's Terrific Trio battling it out between themselves, with how many jumps of the highest difficulty, never seen before in female single figure skating? We might get to see TEN ultra-si jumps from these girls combined alone. Which is more than one could possibly see in the entire season previous years.

Aleksandra the Athletic, Alyona the Angelic, Anna the Ambitious, not discounting the crown ace from the full deck of Awesome And Amazing Aces of course, Alina the Artistic, she still has a chance at a medal.

And even Rika and Bradie are not to be dismissed before they've even started.

Let's hope the free skating competition lives up to our expectations :)

Ugh, I'm so mad that I can't watch live! Stupid group projects :furious:

Anyway, best of luck to all 6 ladies! The amount of talent in this event is just insane, it's going to be such a battle!

I'll be avoiding social media and spoilers and then catching up as soon as I get home. Can't wait!! :yahoo:

i wonder if one of the reasons Aliona is practicing a 3A-3T is she has a goal to add it to her short and do a layout similar to Alysa. she knows Sasha is trying to add one to her short, and this would be a strategy to have a leg up again. would that combo with a solo 2A and 3Lz be higher than what she's doing now?

No, that would hurt her. She would essentially be swapping out a 3F for a 2A.

Alysa Liu is only doing 3A3T because junior ladies aren't allowed to do solo 3As. They are allowed to do any triple-triple combination for the combo, so that's a loophole for junior ladies to do 3A3T in the short, but the 2A is the mandatory axel for them. Once she moves up to seniors she will do a solo 3A and do another 3-3, just like Alena does now.

Just like karina17 mentioned, seniors are not allowed to repeat triple jumps unless they're both in combination. The only way 3A3T could benefit her is if she adds loop combo. Then the layout could be: 3A-3T, 3A, 2A, 2A/3F-3Lo, 3F-eu-3S, 3Lz (2A instead of 2T brings a few valuable points).

Now it's up to Alexandra to hold up her end of the five-quad troika of Trusova, Hanyu and Chen! (Sounds like a law firm. :) )

She can still do 3A-3T like Rika did last season, right? Rika also had another non-loop 3-3 combo, I believe.

Wouldn't that be something if she could do it too!

I still feel it is way too much when she hasn't quite got a four quad program consistent yet, but this is Sasha we're talking about and she is one fearless young lady and hard to convince to slow down a bit it seems lol

Also... that is one law firm I wouldn't like to mess with! :laugh2:

she trained them, I've seen her try flip-loop and lutz-loop before. Let's see, I guess they're thinking about it.

After seeing Yuzuru being completely exhausted after his 5 quads, I wonder if Trusova has the stamina for it. She is a fighter, we know that...but is it too much??
