I know little about the ins and outs of gymnastics but what is it that encourages their athletes to last longer and is it something that skating can emulate? I find it hard to believe that it was just an age limit raise?
Also, the older gymnasts, are they still winning medals and dominating the sport? (I know Simone Biles is but others) because Alina and Evgenia are still winning medals at major competitions and are considered top skaters yet for some reason people consider them has beens and should retire.
Perhaps the actual problem is that the sport needs to increase in popularity to incentive staying even if you're not world number 1?
Well, yes. Counting out Biles, most gymnasts who won medals at the 2016 Olympics were well over 20 (Paseka, Steingruber, Mustafina, Wevers, Raisman). It's becoming ever more unusual for gymnasts to be dominant in their first senior seasons.
Ladies figure skating has always been about youth and that goes back 25 years. The younger the skater, the better are her chances. It seems that the sport hasn't moved away from that trend and I don't see it changing any time soon.
