A Basic Introduction to the Rhythm Dance...

I wanted to post a few links for people who may occasionally like to watch ID events casually, for those who would like to watch it but are baffled by it, or want to learn more. If this is not you, Mr and Ms Expert, please feel free to skip ahead or file your nails or brew a pot coffee, With 27 couples about to tango their little hearts out, we’re all gonna need some!

Formerly known as the "Short Dance," the Rhythm Dance (or RD for short) combines a set pattern dance with original choreography. Ice dancing is, at heart, traditional ballroom dancing on ice. There are a number of set patterns in ballroom that have been incorporated into ID. There is a good reason for this. These are the fundamental patterns learned by every couple, from wee novices to the most experienced of seniors. The RD gives both judges and audience their only chance to compare teams directly. If you want to know why team Her/Him placed ahead of Your Particular Favorite, an excellent way to do so is to compare both teams’ required pattern in the RD.

The set pattern is done in a specific style to a specific rhythm. This year's set pattern is the Tango Romantica, or TR for short. From icedance.com:

“This is a romantic sinuous dance which expresses the soft, lyrical interpretive characteristics of the Tango. It must be skated with deep edges. Foot and body movements must be deliberate and convey a sense of dignity approaching arrogance. Very erect carriage, precise timing, and continuous flow must be maintained. The difficulty of the steps should not be revealed in awkward or stressed upper body positions. Finally, coordination of free leg movements is essential to avoid a tangled, confused effect.”

They have provided a wonderful pdf explaining the tempo and specific steps here:
https://www.ice-dance.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/TangoRomantica.pdf

The TR has proven to be quite the challenge for teams this year, particularly the key points. Key points are specific steps evaluated by the tech panel. They must not only be done on the correct edge, but also on the correct beat. They are scored either Y, N, or T (Timing issue: correct step but not on the correct beat). The pattern is evaluated in two parts, with each part scored separately, eg TR Pattern Pt 1 Level 2 YYTN. Each part is given both a technical score (levels assigned affect the base value of the tech score; the higher the level, the higher the element's base value) and a GOE score. Very very few teams this season have scored a Level 4 YYYY for one section of the dance. Fewer still have scored a Level 4 YYYY for both sections. Paul Poirier gives a possible reason why:

“The two previous patterns (Rhumba and Midnight Blues) had key points with three or four steps long to get a YES or extra level,” Poirier explained. “The Tango Romantica has key points with twelve steps long to get the same call. The longer the key points, the more chances there are for something to be slightly off, and for the technical panel to take key points away.” [https://www.ice-dance.com/site/gilles-poirier-100-ready-to-go/]

In addition to the pattern itself, the RD has a number of required scoring elements. The USFSA has provided a nifty chart explaining them here:
https://usfigureskating.org/content/2018-19 ID RD Chart.pdf

There are five required elements for the Senior RD: two sections of TR, a short lift (maximum of 7 seconds), one combination set of twizzles, and a step sequence. The step sequence can be either Midline (aka in a straight line), Diagonal (from one rink corner to its diagonal opposite) or Circular. The sequence may be done in hold, not touching, or a combination of both. Twizzles are scored slightly differently from other elements: each partner is given an individual level for the element and a GOE score is given to the team as a whole.

The dance must incorporate a change of rhythm, such as paso doble or flamenco. A team can use a second piece of tango music provided it has a different tempo and rhythm than the first. Or a team can use one piece of tango music, provided it has the requisite change in tempo.

If you're new to the wonderfully wacky world of ID, it can all sound pretty complicated, but it's actually all relatively straightforward. The more you watch, the easier it is to identify the specific scoring elements. I do believe that ID is so much more enjoyable if you know what is going on and what exactly is being scored.

And with that in mind let the bloodbath -- I mean games-- let the games begin!

Yasssss. Here, and for the first time this week I can just relax and enjoy the skating without trying to work at the same time.

"Who will be the 2019 World Ice Dance Champions?" Unfortunately, there was no clear favorite in the Prediction Game. Nope. This one's up for grabs. Prediction results:

Stepanova/Bukin - 0.8%
Sinitsina/Katsalapov - 0.8%
Chock/Bates - 2.5%
Papadakis/Cizeron - 95.9%

I think that might just be a personal best for Manni and Roethlisberger! I'm glad, I have a fondness for them. They got a bit out of their 'slow and careful' box even in the patterns, which is nice. :)

Victoria MANNI / Carlo ROETHLISBERGER
Switzeland
Music: "Tango: Tango (Cirque du Soleil); Swing: Peter Gunn Theme performed by Blues Brothers
Choreography by: Barbara Fusar Poli, Corrado Giordani
Costumes:Basic red tango dress for her; open necked white shirt with black pants and suspenders (plus manbun) for him

Required Elements:

Basic tango steps and into the

TR Pt 1 - Level 1 NYNN no goe given
TR Pt 2 - Level 2 YNYN neg .11 goe
They do cover the rink but it all seems very small and TIGHT.
Twizzles - a bit wobbly that second set. Level 3 for her, 4 for him. .21 goe
Stationary Lift - better than Euros. Level 4, .45 goe
Diag St Seq - Level 2, .24 goe

Let's face it: this is so cookie cutter it's like the Baker's Tango Romantica. They both have these lovely long limbs, but it's all flat and two footed and just makes me want to yell USE YOUR KNEES. She at least attempts to put some passion into her performance; he looks like the funky son of a Swiss banker forced to dance at a wedding.

But all that in mind, this actually was the best job I've seen them do with this. :)

Score: 53.94 and a deserved SB
