Congratulations to the medalists at GTSA! I hope Conrad doesn’t beat himself up even as he strives to improve. Both Mark and Alec had definite sparks when they performed and seemed quite pleased with their performances. I enjoyed watching the junior pairs and dance this time and am glad Bruce was able to compete in dance despite his injury. I had fun seeing his and Nat’s FD.

They shut down the TCC thread and I do not have the time to go through the fan fests for all those skaters…

I hope I can keep updated with this thread and hear news about Stephen and Conrad. Also Gabby kept Carmen for her short.

We'll do our best.

Keegan looked fantastic at the GTSA. All the jumps looked great (he's clearly shooting for super GOE on that 3Lz what with the super-complicated leadup, including doing the splits), and in terms of skating skills, spins, etc., nobody else in the men's field comes close.

Nam also looked pretty good, combination mistake aside. The breezy Sinatra fits him better than I would have thought, considering how laboured he looked last year. He's still not especially fast -- though granted, following Keegan isn't going to flatter most skaters in that regard -- but there's a bit of a lighter touch, and he seems to be having fun.

I peeked in on the BC junior dance event earlier tonight as well, to see Miku and Tyler's RD. Not music I'm familiar with (i.e., they used actual tango music rather than repurposing a song), but they looked great.

Senior Lady, Junior Men and Novice Men at GTSA have Shin Amano as one of the technical specialists. That's a good test for August.

Judge #5 is clearly operating on a different GOE scale than the other five judges.

Judge#5 is from USA while the other judges were Canadian. She is also the only one on that panel (except for the referee) who can judge international competitions (albeit not at Worlds/Olympics/Euros/4CCs)

We've seen some variations in judging across panels during the national summer series events.

One can expect this as for most of the judges these are their first events under the revised IJS.

They've all been through seminars, but it will take a bit for interpretation to stabilize. I expect we'll see more of this in IJS events.

Skate Canada appears have worked with the sections hosting the 5 national summer series events to ensure that one or two international level judges are on the Junior and Senior panels.

Having Shin Amano on the Junior men and Senior Women's events over the past two days at GTSA was great.

But I can't say that we're seeing any kind of consistent pattern in terms of international level judges being harsher, or less generous with the 4s and 5s in GOE.

In the Junior Men's event at CQE, it appeared that the world/Olympic level judge was the most likely to give 4s and 5s.

yes, I recall that in one of the previous events (I think it was in Minto), within the same panel, in some cases one ISU/Int judge was harsher than national judges but another with the same status wasn't.

In the previous competions from Summer Series, have the non Canadian judges shown a different pattern compared to national judges?
As you said it is still an early phase, if judge5 has attended a different seminar (by USFSA while the other judges attended seminars organized by Skate Canada), some differences in interpretation may also be due to it.

Looking at her scores, she is not particularly out of line on Nam and Bennet. It's on 2-3 elements from Messing where she seems on a different scale. But her PCS for Keegan are also lower by around 0.5-0.6 while they are similar to the panel's average for Nam and in between for Bennet.

Nam placed in first at GTSA with a clean skate and Keagan came in second after falling on his opening 4Lz, a 4T? and popping his 3A to a 1A.

Nam looks much stronger than he has in a couple of seasons and Keegan has a deeply ambitious program this season. I look forward to watching them both this season, especially Keegan who seems to be gunning for the top men.

Keegan's using the same Chaplin program from last year for his FP while Nam is skating to City of Stars.

Nam Nguyen
FP: 177.56
Total: 262.11

Keegan Messing

FP: 144.1
Total: 242.07

ETA: Keegan also may have popped his 4T-3T to a 3T and popped a 3Lo to a 1Lo (thanks to Colonel Green).

Yeah, Keegan's aiming for three quads (one of them a Lutz) and two 3As, while Nam has two quads (both Salchows) and one 3A. At least nationally, as we've just seen, less ambitious but skated cleanly could pay off nicely if Keegan can't quite deliver.

Yeah, we'll have to see. That being said, I do think Keegan handled the pressure of last year very well and his 4Lz has looked v pretty on video so I have faith he'll improve by large leaps and bounds with his ambitious content.

I'm still waiting for the Senior Men free skate to be archived, so in the meanwhile, you guys can watch my 540p screen recording of Nam's gold medal LP, and I'll later replace it with the higher quality livestream footage: https://vimeo.com/285729657

Yeah, I'm sure he can do it, and if/when he does, the scoring will be impressive.

I guess we'll just have to wait to see whether Keegan or Stephen is the first Canadian man to land the 4Lz internationally this season.

Also, after the GTSA, I can't imagine anybody other than Nam gets the TBD spot at at Skate Canada International.

Golden Skaters,

Moving forward, it has been decided that ONLY Canadian figure skaters will be discussed and/or mentioned in this thread. Please refrain from bringing up skaters from other countries. Please report any posts that do not apply - DO NOT ENGAGE.

The same will also apply to other national-based threads.

Thanks!

Hi folks,

A change to the above post.

We will continue to allow folks to use other skater's names when used in a context of "stacking up" or a "mention" when needed. Please do not troll, bash, or randomly "inject" skaters' names when it is not related to the topic. Thanks!
