Not all juniors were present at this competition, but I agree we don't have the same depth in ladies. it is slightly better in men, though not great as it is quite volatile. Something must be done to sponsor kids and skaters through their career. I know there are some programs but more has to be done. There are hundreds of pre novices, and plenty of novices, even juniors, but most have training issues. Training figure skating is very expensive.

Glad you're willing to agree to disagree Scout.

I have a last thought however that came to me as I was reading your last post.

Seeing the competition and recognizing what the standard is has been a good deal of what our discussion has been about.

However we haven't talked about how Skate Canada has embraced livestreaming as a way for skaters to see and be confronted by their competition.

Most folks on GS are a fan of Ted Barton because he's led the charge on livestreaming for ISU JGPs...

But his view on this comes from being the executive director for BC/YK region where geography makes getting skaters together difficult.

So, Skate Canada's National Summer Series is livestreamed without a paywall and archived.

Those skaters see what their domestic and ISU competitors are able to do.

The USFA has taken a different approach, but I bet there will be many US skaters and coaches watching the livestream of the GTA stop on the NAS... which is also a Canadian national summer series event.

Agreed that it is a hugely expensive sport compared to the funding available, even with NextGen coming recently online.

Ice time is incredibly expensive, and Quebec seems to be the one province where municipalities subsidize ice costs...which makes both figure skating and hockey more widely accessible and affordable.

In Ontario, many cities have moved to a full cost model for ice...

I didn't stream all of the rhythm dances yesterday but did manage to watch most of the last two groups of juniors. Makita/Gunara are a team to watch for the future. It seems that this is their first year in juniors, so a great debut for them. Very nice expression and use of Argentine tango figures such as ganchos throughout, although the patterns could have used a bit more speed. Best twizzles of the field, well synchronized and fast with difficult hop entry.

For the men's free program, Toman edged Nguyen in the free skate by 1 point but Nguyen held on to 1st with the SP lead. Toman attempted both 4S and 4T but fell on both. With the exception of the opening, he had a pretty good skate, landing two triple axel combos and 3Lz-1Lo-3S I think. He had good speed but did seem to be rushing through some of his movements. The moves in the choreo sequence could have been held longer, for example. That could be because of the 30 second cut from the long program though. Nguyen popped a few jumps including his opening 4S and a 3A but did land a 3A-3T. He skated to La La Land, the second one of the night. Would have liked to have seen better expression from him, especially after seeing Firus' La La Land last season. Still it's very early in the season, a decent competition for both of them.

So that's a wrap to the junior free dance. Some nice qualities I saw in the top teams. Yuka Orihara / Lee Royer won and were the class of the field showing a mature, contemporary free dance. Long lines and she especially is very expressive. Miku Makita / Tyler Gunara didn't manage to get on the podium but they do have great potential and nice polish to their elements; I am a new fan of them. Fingers crossed that I'll see these two teams on the JGP.

Ditto. They had my favorite tango in the junior international section at Lake Placid this week and medaled there. Skated it better at Minto, though, with clean twizzles. He has good rotational speed. I agree the footwork & choreo are well designed for the tango. And his expression is excellent in it. They feel like a team.

Dropping in late to say that I saw a lot of potential in the top 6 teams in Junior dance.

They're all in different places, and I think we'll see rankings bobble around as they develop over this season and the next.

However, my broader concerns about the future of Canadian ice dance have been put to rest.

watching both the RD and FD for juniors was extremely revealing... after all the splits... wow, did our juniors rematch themselves even better? I liked the 3 new teams Fabbri and Ayer, Orihara and Royer and Stairs and Graham... i liked less McIsaac and Circelli but again, all these teams are brand new... and I believe the 3 i liked are better off in their new partnerships than former.... and of course the young teams still together are improving : M/G have been mentioned but D'Allessandro and Waddell managed to podium on a tough field here...

Canadian Ice dance is quite strong and at the junior level, there are teams on the verge of aging out but also young and very good promising teams...

Will be a challenge to surpass Liam's lala land program. Requires a special skater to perform to that music.

Unfortunately, Orihara/Royer can not compete internationally this season because Yuka, with Kanata Mori, represented Japan at Mentor Torun Cup last season. :(

Oh that's too bad. Depending on how they do, it's possible that they could make the WJC this upcoming March since Mentor Torun Cup happened last January/February. Based on Lee's age, they only have the 2019-2020 JGP season to compete before they age out.

ETA: Also, Lee turned 20 yesterday, what a great belated birthday present for him to win Minto :)

They've met the NextGen criteria at Minto, so they are eligible from a technical point of view for international assignments from Canada.

One expects that Skate Canada will be sending them to international assignments as soon as they clear the waiting period.

I remembered the waiting period for ISU Championships was 18 month while for senior B was 12 months, and didn't know that ISU revised Rule 109.

It's good to know Yuka and Lee has a chance to go to JWC this season. :) It looks like they are going to participate a local competition in Tokyo (RD only).

Caveat: I’ve not been paying close attention over the last couple of months so sorry if this has been commented on already. :slink:

I just watched Stephen Gogolev’s SP and FS. VERY impressive! :2thumbs:

Has he grown over the last 6 months? He looks taller... I believe his FS is new so it will gather momentum with a bit of mileage, but he had a couple of what I would consider uncharacteristic stumbles in footwork, making me think he hasn’t got used to bigger feet?

Regardless, his quads and general skating skills are remarkable for someone so young and I am looking forward to seeing how he will stack up in the JGP.

No problem! You could probably ask the sleuths on his FF how much Stephen grew according to the ISU records. Certainly those costumes accentuated the length of his legs and made me wonder, and I've seen the photos of him that appeared on Instagram this winter and spring.

If you look upthread you'll see that the junior men skated in the evening and then the very next morning. From reports, the skaters looked and acted exhausted. The juniors I saw skate that morning on the LS all stumbled at one point or another.

His ISU bio says he is 154 cm right now. I think he did grow, but less than what people think. If you compare his height with Brian and Lee at Minto this year, and the Ontario summer skate last year, as seen here:

http://gogogogolev.tumblr.com/post/176357982785/when-you-skate-great-you-get-a-high-five-from

You can see he grew a bit, but not by a foot like some people are estimating. His haircut and costume made a lot of the difference I think. His spindly legs and proportions makes him look taller the ice too.

^^ Thanks for your comments Haleth and fierysky - there's so much activity on this forum during what I figured was supposed to be 'the peaceful off season' I plain and simple haven't kept up. I probably should stay quiet and catch up on reading instead, but... didn't :p

The short time between SP and FS would definitely be a factor on skating quality, and skating a full FS in the morning is brutal anyways.

I like Stephen's hair cut, too. I know he's barely 13, but it's a more mature look as he starts his JGP journey this month. Not long now until Bratislava...20 days.
